Did a search for this topic but came up empty...

I remember reading a thread someplace that gave specifics on what series (year) U.S. $100 bills not to bring as they are easily counterfeited and thus the money changers won't accept them. It was 1990 or 2000... can somebody refresh my memory? Heading there again in a few days and need to go to the bank to get my party cash!

Thanks!

The 1991 series $100 bills are not accepted as well as the new Clinton $4.00 bill.

Try searching the "Money Matters" section for the word - exchange - you'll come up with a few threads that address some of your questions, plus lots of other information.

First, I recommend bringing the updated $100 bills... 1996 or newer. I have been turned away many times with the older ones. I do believe there is a problem with (my memory escapes me) the 2000 or 2001 bills. Not sure but I'm sure if you go to any reputable exchange or bank you should have no problem.

Mr Alan
Only bring US $100 bills with the larger drawing of Ben Franklin that extends to the top and bottom of the note. This is known as the Series 1996-2001 $100 Note.

But the best choice is to bring Travelers Checks. Even after the check cashing fee, you get a better exchange rate than cash because the banks are not liable for counterfeit items if they following the ID procedures established by the TC company. Of course, if the checks are lost or stolen, you can get a refund. To keep per check fees down, get TCs in denominations of at least $100.

I encountered this problem too with an older bill. I was wondering what was going on. I went to two places and was turned down both times. Gave the bill to my friend and had him try at a third location and it was finally accepted.

They won't take 1996 series and make sure the bills have NO marks on them.
