About to move to Bangkok - how easy would it be to open a bank acconunt ? Can I just do with my passport and a copy of my appartment rental contract ? Would ideally want a visa card ? I have read on here about prepaid visa cards ? Can I BACS / CHAPS money from a UK account to Bangkok. I am having to close down my UK accounts, long story - so will not be coming with any cards or bank account when I get there - just company credit card and travelers cheques for personal use

Also my salary is paid in UK and I pay tax in the UK. I am getting a biz visa for Bangkok as I am working for a western startup opening an office in Bangkok. Do I have to worry about tax in Thailand ?

Thanks

WoodyUK

I suggest Bangkok Bank. You will need your passport & 50,000 baht. They will issue you a VISA card which can be used for ATM transactions. You can wire in funds from abroad to that account. Bkk Bank branches in Carrefor are open 7 days a week from 10 am to 8 pm except public holidays. I find it to be very convienient.

Seems like they told me not to let my balance fall below 500 baht or 1000 baht. Can't remember. Choose a branch near home or work to open it. You will need a mailing address to furnish them.

Something a bit strange here. How are you being paid in the UK, if you've had to close your bank accounts down there?

Dotcom's suggestion re transferring your salary into the Bangkok Bank is fine, but if you don't have an account there, it's going to be kinda tricky.

We need more information before being able to help.

Sounds like another divorce/taxes/lien kinda running away from something type of story. What's the deal, here? Like Scobie said, more information yields better answers.

My personal, small experience is that opening an account is easy, though it is very limited without work permit or local residence. You can get the equivalent of a VISA debit card, though, but not much else (Bank of Bangkok, YMMV)

Officially all income from work done in Thailand is taxable (even if you get paid abroad or pay taxes there).

There are mutual agreements though.... ask a tax consultant.

And don't think you get a Visa credit card.. it's just (as Daffy said) a debit card you can use to pay at accepting points of sale. Internet use seems not to work.

The Siam Commercial Bank issues similar Mastercard debit cards. But don't try to get an account with them without a work permit.

Woodyuk,
In January this year, I opened up a joint Bangkok bank account at Suk with a Thai girl, (good evidence that you met that girl when it comes time to get a tourist visa for her to travel to OZ).

Put in 1000B, ie 500B to open account and 500B deposit into ATM account, and they only wanted my passport and her ID. Have never deposited any further money into that account and is still current. Was issued with a visa card.

Whole process from time of interview for application till we got off the chair and left was 15 minutes.

No problems at all, maybe because it was joint with a TG that I had no problem.

Barrafish.

Yes, "maybe" it was because it was a joint account with a Thai citizen.

Are you able to be paid offshore? Open an account with HSBC in the Isle of Man. Then open a HSBC account in Bangkok. That way you can transfer whatever amounts you like for just 10GBP a time. You can also use that account for free transfers to any bank with a UK sort code.

As long as you are out of the UK for one full tax year (April to April, so if you are coming now you'd have to make it to April 2007) then you are not liable for any tax in the UK.

Fill in a P85 with your tax office in the UK.

Surely you are getting some paid locally? You would need to to satisfy your tax liablity in Thailand (approx 15%).

As for credit cards, you won't have a chance of getting one locally without a work permit. Officially you won't get a bank accounbt without a WP, but I know so many people who have not been asked (Last Thai account I opened I was asked and refused as my WP was in for renewal, and they would not accept a paper copy, despite the fact I already had 3 accounts with that bank).

quick question re WP. I am getting a biz visa for Bangkok. The company I work for is a UK company opening an office in Bangkok and I am consulting from that company in Bangkok. Will a biz visa give me a WP or is that something different. Would have not thought I need a WP if I was working for a UK company with a local office ?
