I know the most obvious answer to my question is “Its subjective to the individual…” So lets see I will be living with a thai girl. -No need for bar girls -we don’t drink much (I think those are chief offenders to some of you guys massive budget needs) I am an ex student looking to be in Thailand for six months so- 6 months total budget baht 244998 – or a month 40833 baht I will be paying for everything (she offered to find work) but I don’t see the point (best job she could find would pay 6k baht a month and then I wont see her). A month in Bangkok I figure:- Condo Rent : 8,000 baht Utilities: 3000 baht / Food: 10,000 baht / Internet ADSL: 1,700 baht / Basic Cable TV: 500 baht / Phone: 800 baht / Laundry: 1,000 baht / Miscellaneous Household Expenses: 1,500 baht / Miscellaneous Personal Items: 3,000 baht / Transportation: 1000 baht / So that’s about 10000 baht left for entertainment a month. Is that enough for entertainment? I mean days out. How about my budget? is it realistic? Anything to high or too low?

You could try to expand your budget by 2 baht...245,000 baht is easier to work with... Your budget will be fine... Just make sure you're not getting fedup with your girlfriend/boyfriend, so you have to hunt for a mia noi!

jet, you are correct in that drinking and mongering are the biggest cost for most... plenty of people (alot of teachers) get by on 40,000baht a month.....BTW... UBC cable is in the neighborhood of 1,500 a month.... 10,000baht for entertainment sounds kinds low...IMO...as certainly you guys would want to hit an island or 2.... if possible keep 2 or 3 thousand US in your countries bank account for the unexpected costs that always pop up.... my 2 cents, atl

====================================== well im meant to be staying for a few weeks with her parents so I guess that will cheap ====================================== This is a common misconception (well, at least in my case). In the last 12 years I've had my score of GFs and I've learned to stay as far away from the parents (and other leechers) as possible. Although I think I kind of enjoy the out-of-the-city life once in a while...

Food: 10,000 baht
Whoa! That's approx. 330 B per day or 160 B per meal, will that be for 2 persons? I think, you'd better cook at home rather than eat out. Since, she will not be working, you could try out her cooking skills.

dam everything is telling me I either cant afford Bangkok, or I need to work longer before coming! maybe I should just accept a shorter stay. BTW, travel insurance costs a bomb… most places will only insure for 90 days (so you long stayers) do you bother with insurance? Im not sure about it… but it does cover losing passport, planes (missing, delayed and cancellations) wat do you guys think?

You won't be working, she won't be working so why BKK ?? Your money will go a lot further outside BKK,, think Kon Kaen, Chiang mai,Ubon Ratchasima, nearly anywhere except BKK will be substantially cheaper. Just throwing in an alternative. Mel

If you book all your flights on the same itinerary (even if multiple airlines are involved) you don't need to worry because if you miss a connection then they will rebook you on another connecting flight without charge (even if different airline). A single itinerary is where one airline issues all tickets, even when multiple airlines may be involved. But if you book two completely separate itineraries yourself, then you need to make sure that you have enough time between connections to make them even if your flight is delayed. Otherwise you may have to pay a substantial change fee (and possibly have to pay a higher fare) for any missed connections. Before you leave, always check the weather at all intermediate stops to make sure you will make your connections. If you loose your passport, you just go to the embassy for your country. Most regular tourists in Thailand make a color copy of the passport id page and visa stamp page and leave the passport in a safe place in their hotel safe, etc. Bring American Express Traveler Checks to guard against loss or theft (in denominations of at least $100 each). The exchange rate is just as good as cash even after check cashing fees. I believe that travel insurance is often used to cover a refund (even if tickets are non-refundable) for a vacation that you cannot take because of sickness, etc. That is one reason it is so expensive. I don’t think it applies in your case. If you have an American Express card, or Visa/Mastercard gold or platinum, then they usually offer free insurance when you charge your tickets to the card (insurance for lost baggage, travel accidents, etc).

Mel's got a good and valid point - if you won't work, and she won't work (let's be realistic), and neither of you drink, party, or dod p4p -- why bother with Bangkok? Even just outside the immediate vicinity of Bangkok (say, Muaeng Thong Thani), or further outwards in the North East, you'd find that the same money goes a heck of a lot further.
