hey all,
just a quick note, i'm looking for feedback. I am on my way to LOS, and the tg there wanted a bikini. I bought it from Victoria Secret, cost is US$40. It arrived in thailand via UPS
and they want me to pay 856baht in duty and taxes.
To calculate they added in the freight (300 baht) -thats ok, but, then they pounded me w/ 30% duty, and 7% tax plus 200baht additional tax.
Most countries have an amount you can import without getting hit on customs.
Anyone familiar w/ this kind of thing? Anyway to fight it?
I saw on the website that there are different levels of customs - and they put the bikinis in a government protected goods category. WTFO?
anyway... i'm ready to tell them to keep it.

... any Thai bureaucracy is a suck hole from which escape is futile... smiling incipidly, they will crush you as an amusement... avoiding the aggravation they would lay on you in the first 3-5 minutes alone is worth forfeiting THB 856.
... I'd walk... bring the Thai GF a new bikini... take it out in trade... she'll be delighted that you thought enough of her to do that.
... and... give the Thai GF the customs receipt and maybe she can grind them down on her own time and at her own expense... maybe worth it to her, but I really doubt it is worth your effort.

If my memory serves me correctly, a couple of years ago the Customs Department was voted the most corrupt department in Thailand, surpassing even the BIB.
The Customs agent probably has a mia noi that he thinks will look good in your bikini.
It isn't worth the trouble to get involved for this amount.

Additionally, there's some consolation to be had if you remind yourself that the dollar is only about 30 baht now, not 42 like long back. That means your Victoria's Secret cost you about 480 baht less than before. The net damages on customs duty is barely 376 baht. Take the airport train instead of a cab to get to the city and you have more than recovered your customs duty. Now order another pair for your lovely GF and make her -- and yourself -- happier

I would pay the customs duty just to piss off the agent that thinks he is going to get to keep it. He obviously wants it for some reason.
It's not the cost, it's the principle of him wanting it. If it has a Victoria Secret tag on it, then he wants it for the status to give his mia noi.
Pay the duty, and piss him off, then comment on how hard it was to even find in the USA. That will get him real good as he has probably already promised something nice to his GF thinking you won't pay the duty...lolol.

An update to the story is that Victoria Secrets had actually sent out 2 bikinis - the first one lost, so they sent that 2nd one to BKK. Well, the 1st one arrived yesterday here.
I've told Thailand UPS to ship the other bikini back and I will get my money back.
We'll see what UPS say about this.
on a side note: The Aussie govt is just as bad. Just shipped my car in from the UK to Oz - the Quarantine billed me $500 to steam clean the engine. What a f***ing racket. Any other country will charge less than $100 for that. Ha
life goes on - I could have bigger worries. cheers, and thanks again - I'll be in Manila on Sunday on my way to BKK...

Next time. Order the bikini and send to your house. Then put in brown envelope and send thru regular air mail to LOS.
The brown envelope goes straight to my condo every time so far without paying any fees.

Next time, send it via USPS, priority. Via UPS and FEDEX you need a commercial invoice. USPS priority and express no.
When you go to the PO, you fill out the forms and declare the value.
A bikini? Put it in a USPS Priority Envelope!
