I used AMEX TC's in $100 increments, and new $100 bills. Noticed that the exchange rate on some days was better for TC's, on other days better for $100 bills. The best rates I found was with my atm card. No exchange fees from my bank other than the standard transaction fee that is usually charged.

I have never noticed that the rate for cash (US$) is ever better than TCs. However, there is a handling fee of 30 baht and a tax of 3 baht per TC. The net result is usually less baht with a TC, but the amount is very small.

Follow-on questions:

1.) Was the 30 baht handling fee charged once for this transcation, that might have included more than one TC?

2.) Let's say you converted ten (10) Traveler's Checks, each with a 100 dollar value. The total charges and fees for this transaction would be 60 baht?

Thanks

Mr Alan
I think I paid 20 baht fee per TC check cashed at Bank of Bangkok, plus the 3 baht tax. That was several months ago, so I don't know if they have raised it to 30 baht.

Even after the fee and taxes, I thought that the TC exchange rate was still a bit better than cash (but don't remember for certain), but it was probably close.

Handling fee of 30 baht per TC and a tax of 3 baht per TC. I think the tax is actually on the 30 baht handling fee. If you cashed 10 TC at a cost of 33 baht per TC, the total cost would be 330 baht. I brought about half cash (US$100) and half TCs (US$100) and had cashed a few US$100 TCs in Bangkok and Phuket. Taxes and fees appear to be the same in both places and at different currency exchange locations. I guess it would be better to bring TCs in US$500 denomination so two US$500 TC would only cost 66 baht.

The most interesting thing about this thread (putting aside of course Mr Alan's wonderfully erudite and useful advice on what we should be spending per day in Thailand), is the fact that people still use TCs.

My ATM card works in ATM machines all over the world - why bother with TCs. I think the rate is excellent but, even if it isn't, what's a few baht between friends?

Something else to consider is to check if your bank from home has a branch office in BKK. If you go to that bank, provided they have the customer services locally, they may cash your T/C with little or no service charge when you show you have an account back home. B of A was like this.

Ah yes, the ATM card! How backwards and stupid of me to not think of using one. The ATM card that allows you to access cash worldwide and have the location of your transactions printed in black and white on your monthly statements; easy proof that you have made a side trip to Bangkok while in Asia.

IMO:
Just carry cash, preferably $100's. It's easy to exchange and you don't have to hassle about findin' and ATM or carry your passport around so that you can exchange your tc's.

Thailand is safe enough.

ABC,

So, do you change a substantial amount of $100s at Don Muang, or do you change small amounts as needed in Pattaya? My tendency is to want to change a large amount upon arrival, stash it in a safety box, and use as needed.
