Big Dusa is write on!

1996 Ben Franklins are a no go. In June walked around to three or four exchanges with these before the hotel exchanged at low rate. In October I brought nothing but 50's and this worked out fine. No probs.

The US treasury has issued a new multi-colored $50 note, so it will not be long before the old ones are not accepted.

I wrote about this after a trip in March 2002, I think it was in "money matters". The bills I had problems with at the time was 1989, No one took them appart from BGLT's as they are on a list from the central bank with regards to counterfeits.

ATM card works good too. And as a bonus all BG's have a internal map of the nearest ATM.

The money exchange places are picky about the older US$100 bills because there are quite a bit of counterfeits of the older US$100 bills in circulation. The 1996 series (big heads) also has the same problem. Best if you only bring series 2000 or newer notes, or just bring TCs.

BTW, acceptance of a bill or not has nothing to do with the issuance of new multi-color bills of the same denomination.

i was just in phuket and bkk last week. I was told a couple times by people in the exchange booth that they will not accept anything older than 2000.

my hotel was willing to accept it after they photocopied and recorded it. they told me if it turns out bad, they will just charge it to my credit card

The US Treasury has not yet issued a multi-colored $100 bill. Only new $20 and $50 multi-colored bills have been issued.

The next multi-colored USD denomination to be introduced will be the $10 note in 2005. The $100 note is also slated to be redesigned, but a timetable for its introduction is not yet set. There are no plans to redesign the $5 note at this time, and the $1 and $2 notes will not be redesigned.

The dollar is falling so fast I think you would do better bringing Sterling or Euros
