I think you are in for a hell of a ride (pun internded) I can understand your feelings a little and yes sometimes it is great to be "The Man" Most if not all of the Bros here have done it. Try and sus out the guys that live here. and listen to there advice and read about there adventures.
I am not saying that the Bros that visit here are not worth listening to just that the old hands have seen it countless times
To wake up to that nice young chick in the morning thats all warm and ready for sex is great but wait until you try communicating with her beyond what whould you lke to eat. It is a non starter. Most of the Bro's that get on well here know enough of the lingo to be able to communicate. It is important if you are going to make a go of it here.
In your case you are in more danger than the rest as you indicate that you do not need to work. The last think you need in LOS if you want to reamain sane is time with nothing to do and cash in your pocket.
I think most of the Bro's whould admit that they have been sucked in and swallowed up by the nightlife here some have managed to crawl out of the deep dark pit and now only play with it on the edge. However many get swallowed up forever.
You first priority is to try and find a couple of mates that are able to throw you a lifeline if you need it.
Be "The Man" no problem but be warned 99.99% of all BG will emotionally slit your through for a stang and I would bet a years pay that your "smoker" is no different.
If she is that good looking there will be someone on this forum that has had her and if she was the exception to the rule she would have been pulled out already
It would be a good investment for you to contact Thaiprivateeye on this forum and drop him a few bucks to find out the inside Gen. You might be surprised

If you're walking around 365 a year how many women do you think you'll see or meet that you'll be attracted to? My bet is more than 2 and you won't have anyplace to take them and will be on a leash. Honestly, I can see how you feel and I totally understand it. I also see how the guys on the forum feel, and I totall understand *them.*
So, here's my take on it.
I don't know your exact feelings on other expat females, but if you don't mind them, then you might try to go in that direction. Granted, a lot of guys on this forum are so attracted to Thai femmes because they are sweet, biddable, super-thin, and definitely know a "woman's place." Then you have expat femmes, which are outspoken, occasionally emotional (depending on the time o' the month, of course) and have big boobs and hips (not exactly thin, you know).
So, provided that you haven't been poisoned against expat ladies by these sicko femi-nazis we employ in America, then you will likely find a woman who speaks excellent English, is extremely accomodating and horny, most likely bisexual (not bi-for-cash like most TGs), and a hell of a lot of fun. So far as I know, we're not nearly as neurotic, either! 
Just think.... you could find an expat lady that's just as groovy and young as I am!!! TeeHee!
Now, I know that it's great to wake up next to somebody, I rather enjoy it, myself, but you know if you get involved with a TG, you're looking at an obsessive girl. If you play your cards straight and hook up with a decent expat, you might be able to complete a mutual sex-and-friendship pact with no obligation or expectation of marriage.

ÝIf you want someone to negotiate for you, and you are getting a serviced apartment then you can use a good travel agent as the serviced apartments are basically hotels. ÝHowever, they of course will take their piece and no thai ÝI've met is going to bend over backwards to get a falang a deal but they can get it reduced somewhat if you can't be bothered with haggling. ÝIf you are price conscious your best bet is to look around and get a good idea of prices and then negotiate on your own. ÝEverything is negotiable. ÝPrice is going to vary hugely Ýdepending on where you want to live and type of accomodations. Ý

Assuming there are apts available, all of them will rent mid month.. you pay the pro rata portion when you move in (say 15 days rent) and then pay your normal monthly rent on the first of the next month.
Serviced apts are an expensive way to go. Better to find a place for less money and have someone come in 1-2 times a week and do some cleaning if needed.

In anticipation my thoughts vacilate wildly on what to do in the LOS. Thai girl called me this morning. she calls me about twice a week. (Good sign, bad sign?) she was excited for me to come back. obviously. She sounded hesitant about stopping work. NOt because she loves what she does. she was not sure i understood that i would have to take care of her apartment bills etc. Would like to buy her out anyhow. but now i think i may be better off not living with her. was also thinking about haing her as my bkk girl and then going to pattaya etc. for real skanking, figuratively no skanks for me please
As to farang women in thailand. most i saw were really f_cking hot. Thought about that while i was there. I figured nobody in their right mind would bring sn unnatractive woman to thailand. Why would you?

ps while i was there i hung out with her and bunch of her friends in a hotel room that was being paid for by a guy in california the guy was maintaining this girl for 20,000 baht a month. so i feel that that is the price i am looking at for this girl probably less if i do get suckered into a live in situation.
