I lived in Pattaya for one month on 30K baht. This included hotel, live in BG, food and going out. It was tight but I had fun.
I could live like a minor king on 80K baht per month in Pattaya. Up country I could live like a middle king on this.

I work overseas and pull into Thailand 250,000 per month, (not including private savings accounts) if I am daft and buy shit for the house etc. then it all goes, if I am careful and live an ok lifestyle going out a few times a week and a couple of small breaks then 100,000 does ok.
Thats less 15,000 for the mortgage and the rest on me and the missus living very nicely.
I am presently planning to build 3 shops and 2 appartments that will bring in an income of 100,000 when fully rented, ( I have the land and am getting planning permission right nowfrom OrBorTor) plus I have a house that I can rent for 20-25,000.
I plan to build 4-5 more properties in the next 9 years to rent out so I hope to finish working away and continue looking after my rentals for my dotage... total income should be around 250,000 per month at todays rates.
But like I say 100,000 is a very comfortable existance...
Total investment so far is 8,000,000 baht (on completion of shops) but I still have to buy more land for the other 4-5 houses.
I reckon 250,000 pounds wisely spent would set you up with a nice income.

Well I make around 1M TB per month and don't think I could make much less and still have the same life style. A good chunk of my expenses are gadgets, cars, and travel these items cost the same or more in Thailand. For example my last car cost $87K in the US, but I am told it would have cost close to $200K in Thailand. So I guess I would need $15-20 Mil in the "Bank".

So you're looking at making 1.2m a year on an investment of 8m thats a 15% return, not bad at all most hedge funds would bite your arm off for that sort of return.

If your main pleasure in life is driving sports cars you're hardly gonna move to thailand regarldess of cost there just isn't the roads to enjoy them. Unless you like sitting stationary along suk in your F430
And as for gadgets and all that, isn't that one of the nice things about asia realising that you don't need all that shit to be content. Sometimes less is more.
Jetting around the world doesn't come cheap thought I can appreciate that.

I have done the calculation and I would need approx. 150,000 BT per month to maintian house and lifestyle. My pensions (when they kick in) would cover that.
Would have to use savings for extras of course...

Slaves to corporate dollar... well, interesting question although in its formulation awfully biaised. I would feel bored to death if had to retire, dunno how much money I'd need to feel comfortable... prolly as important would be opportunities to get involved in various kinds od deals while living half retired in Thailand.

-The longer you stay in Thailand, the more aware to shortcuts, money saving etc. you become, you are happy to eat Tod mun Gai on the footpath for 25 bt rather than going into KFC and pay 125bt, you get cheaper deals from cabbies, clothes merchants etc, so I reckon that balances the escalating costs - also long term, what of the Thai Baht ?? - allowing for the countries exports, [ apart from TGs] one would hardly think it is going to strengthen ?? - Plenty of younger guys/teachers survive ok on 30,000bt - of course being young you cop alot more freebies too ! But I found as a round figure, 100,000bt made for a very comfortable lifestyle, of that, I guess half would have gone in apartment rent and food ; sorry, but I saw too many bad deals to ever invest in the local real estate. If you had the spare $$ - I would think invest in a house in your own country, and spend the rent in LOS.
The problem when trying to work out long term expenditure in LOS, comes down to 2 factors...
TG and Health.
By that, I mean at some stage, you are going to get involved with a TG on a permanent basis, - and she will get you for some... regardless of what you say or think now ! - and secondly your health, Thai hospitals are not cheap for foreigners, and that is something you cant really budget on - but need to have covered.
