This is so true....locals hardly ever tip.
I was recently in a taxi with our head of operations and the taxi fare was Bt93...she paid with a Bt100 note and was given (and fully expected) the change. This was perfectly normal to the taxi driver and the Thai person.
In another example of Thai behaviour... A son of a wealthy Thai diplomat (actually probably the most famous thai diplomat in the world) recently took a subway trip back to the office...cost Bt18 and he made sure he got a receipt so he could claim it back from the company.....
Tipping is for farang only...Thais dont tip. Period.

Just plain wrong. I know quite a few thais that do tip, I don't think it's completely out of the norm since I have seen it before with other aquaintenances as well.

a little bit of truth for everyone.. some people tip, some don't... but Thai's do not tip anywhere near what westerners tip and many times not at all...
so back to the index..... our old factory upcountry we were paying the equivilant of $80 per month in wages... mostly Burmese that would cross the border everyday to work... in BKK our minimum was around $180 per month, in Cambodia, around $20 per month..... in Isaan, average wage in the filds is around 150 baht per day.

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject. I probably confused the issue by bring the example of a 100 baht tip to a hotel porter or waitress into my original post. The thread was not so much about tipping but the real value of that tip to the receiver, i.e. the 100 baht index. I am getting the feeling that a four or five times ratio is getting close though.
My 'girl friend' in Bangkok has a low paid job earning 8,000 baht per month plus commission, which might take it up to 12,000 or so.
Assuming that's not an unusally low wage for a girl in her twenties working outside of the bar / FL scene, when I give her 2,000 baht, as I do on occassion with the cover story that it's to help with her English lessons or whatever, I am giving her the equivelant of a weeks wages at her basic salary or something like £120.00 / $210.00. If I am right about the buying power of 2,000 baht why does she not look more grateful  I put it down to her older harder girlfriend who is being sponsored to some extent by her New York based boyfriend, but that's another story.

Something I neglected to put in my earlier post,, I am VERY selective whom I tip ( remember tipping is almost unheard of in Australia) so when I tip in Thailand or Vietnam it is always a bigger tip to those that go the extra mile / provide good service.
If a taxi driver tries to rip me off I will fight with him to the point of going to the local police,,, but if the taxi driver takes me where I want to go, acts at least nicely and asks for correct fare,,,then at least a 50-100BHT tip, same for restaurants etc etc.

Or look at it this way...assuming she is not butt ugly or fat... she could get Bt4,000 for 15 mins for letting a Jap put his dick insider her.
So thats half her monthly wage for 15 mins work. If she did that 4 times a day she would be earning over US$10,000 per month. This is in effect her opportunity cost for not taking any Jap dick. So when you give her Bt2,000 this may be worth about one weeks wages but it is less than 0.5% of her potential monthly earnings.
No wonder she look pissed off.........

Seriously though thailife, I think you are generalising a little too much there, do you really believe that 'All women in Thailand are for sale' I have another 'friend' in Chiang Mai who is a nurse in a local hospital, married and from a very good family background. She is not for sale, I can assure you.
Basically though, I agree that there is an attitude of 'you have it so you can give some to me', from many, maybe even most. (I am not talking out and out bar girls or obvious F/L here, with them it's all of them without exception)
