If you are so desperate to leave farangland and come to Thailand I think you will have to be more flexible with your plans - Bt2m is not enough to retire and you really dont want to live as a pauper in isaan as LY pointed out.
Why dont you put aside Bt1m and come to Thailand - that should be enough to last you 12 to 18 months. Enough time to potentially find you in a job in say Chiangmai that would enable you to survive here more permanently. Farangs are appearing in jobs everywhere in Thailand now - I even saw one as a shop assistant in the Sony shop in Emporium.
If it doesnt work out, well you still have a Bt1m left to resettle yourself in farangland. Meanwhile you will hopefully have got over whatever trauma makes you so desperate to leave in the first place.

LY and the others have hit the nail on the head. My TGF's village is near to Udon Thani city, and I can't see retiring up there for less than 20k Baht a month. Other thing to keep in mind is how much things might cost in 10 or 20 years. You could find yourself in a very deep hole you can't climb out of (farangs do jump from balconies after losing the plot like this, btw). You will also find the family of any "farm girl" doesn't want their daughter with a moneyless farang, lol! They expect her to land a bigger fish, and the pressure they will put on her about this could easly shatter your retirement plans.
So I'd suggest you get a bit farther ahead financially now, and you'll be able to do this far more happily. I live in my TGF's house when I'm upcountry with her. It's much like what DG has described in other threads. No furniture, no indoor plumbing (just got a single spigot outside that works part of the day), starvation never too far away, get sick and die too easily, etc. You see this if you spend much time up there.
I have to agree with Oaktoad: "to be very honest, if you don't know where you can get a house for B500K, then you don't know enough about Thailand to retire there.. " Kinda terse advice, but there is no romance in poverty. It's quite ugly, in fact. So I'd say, do some more homework, and then put your toe in the water. There are some good online sites that feature farang stories/pics about building houses upcountry (UTSE here and you'll probably find some links).
Best of luck. Plenty of people retire upcountry, but you gotta do the homework first, and it can take several years,

seriously wake up and smell the som tam man.
you can rent a 2 bed house for 1,500/2,000 a month better than forking out 500,000 at once get a feel for the place.
do you speak thai well, I think not because if you did you would know a lot about the place.
you can't go on vacation in BKK see the scene and think i'll find the poorest farm girl in the poorest place and i'll be happy.
please do not think that ALL thai girls want a fallng let alone a poor one,
take a 6 month vacation rent a place and get a feel for it,
then you'll know if it is for you.

Visit upcountry first! It is not for everyone. There is lightyears difference between upcontry and BKK/Pattaya. I would have to have the Happy Herb concession to live in Tunapussy Isarn for any period of time.

My mate rents a house in Pichit for 3,000 baht a month and drinks beer chang. Why not try that for a year and see how you go from there.

I built a nice bungalow, with aircon and tiles etc... Nothin fancy, but it was nice.
Total cost approx. 250,000Baht.
I saw was, becuase I ended up just giving it to the ex.. (it was hers anyway I suppose!)
I could NEVER live in Issan full time, a few days at atime MAX!!

Thanks all for your advice. Several people mentioned I should do my homework first. Well, that is why I started this thread: it is part of my homework ;)
Plan A is to retire/stop working for a while and plan B is to live & work in Thailand. Does anyone know somebody working at AIT (Asian Institute of Technology) or any other Thai University. I wonder what the salaries are if you are a staff member (not faculty) ? I am seeking to apply for a job as part of my plan B. It is a difficult question to answer I know. I will find out anyway during my next visit I guess.

It would be very difficult to get a 'staff job' almost anyplace unless you have a skill set they just can't find.
Same goes for teaching.. you can teach English.. or perhaps subjects in English, but other than that, not much available..
even to teach English they have tightened the requirements so that to teach at a decent place you have to have a certificate.. and that takes time to get...
private tutoring is always an option.. but you have to be a go getter to get enough to really make a difference..
