CN Sounds like you're just the kind of guy who could settle here quite easily. BKK has the same kind of teeming Oriental buzz as HK, and if you respond to that, and object to life in the West on the grounds you state, it should suit you well. Best thing about it is that you can never doubt for a second that you're alive. Fastmover may be right about the difficulty of moving back after 5 years in LOS. ÝInstead, why not try an extended reconnaissance? At your age, you can easily take a year or two out (say after finishing university) and it won't affect the rest of your life if things don't suit. If you have a degree & do a TEFL course here (cheap), you can always get a job teaching English which will at least take care of ordinary living expenses. You'd be well advised to come with a stash of extra money, though, because any red-blooded 21yo probably WILL want to hit the P4P scene quite hard at first. The general eye-candy count in LOS is alarmingly high and acts as a constant stimulus to these endeavours. At any event, after that amount of time in LOS, you'd have a much better idea of how you'd like to live here if you settled permanently and how much money it would take. A wide range of expat lifestyles is possible in LOS. Ý As for expats, I don't think we're quite as appalling as HS makes out. Sure, there's no shortage of professional whingers (an expat breed which can be found anywhere), but they tend to hang together and are quite easy to avoid. Fastmover is also right that there are some complete arseholes - probably a higher percentage than back home. But there's also plenty of interesting & entertaining people who are receptive to the culture around them and really enjoy living here - not solely for P4P reasons. And the Thais? Well, on another planet though they are, they're also very tolerant and accommodating, and there's no bar to socialising with foreigners. As you grow more confident around them this just tends to happen naturally. As time passes, the 'Thai' element in your life gradually increases at the expense of the 'farang' element without needing to be forced. That said, I don't think you could ever expect to feel anything other than a Westerner living in Thailand because the culture is just so different. The beauty of the place is that this doesn't matter. Ý ÝÝ

"As for expats, I don't think we're quite as appalling as HS makes out." Arcadius, Didn't mean to paint everybody with the same brush. ÝIn fact, I have a lot of good friends who are expats. ÝIt's just that they don't sit in bars on 33 everynight and get pissed. ÝThe suggestion that a new guy hang out in that scene just seemed counter-productive to me, if the guy wants to LIVE in Thailand. ÝPerfectly fine for an extended vacation, if carousing is your idea of fun. But to decide if Thailand is the place to live, you may as well go to Las Vegas, or Tijuana, if all you see is the inside of the bars, and a few fellow countrymen... haam sup

correct - for years I used to spend the nights sitting on a plastic stool at the head of soi 13, adjacent to the old Thermae - 30 baht for a bottle of mehkong, 10 baht a coke, and the best passing parade on earth - any of whom were available if and when required, much the same thesedays, except mehkong now 60 baht, point is, you can have a lot of fun there for around 100 baht ! and then find as good, if not better looking p4p who will be happy to stay LT for less than the soi 33 bar fine - Obviously the longer you are here, the more you seek out the 'value"

The thing about expats is that--Asia/third world/developing country--they are basically the same. The guys who never contact locals are never really anywhere in the first place. Just skimming the surface. The guys who drop-in to the local social order find other expats---well, too expat. Until that is when they finally realize that you are always an expat and can NEVER become a local. Striking a balance can only be done if you have a balanced life normally. If you are on a soul search--keep moving on, because you are unlikely ever to find it in a foreign culture radically different from your own. A lot of expats are here, there and everywhere because they don't want the responsibility of being right where everyone wants them to be. Back home. So why would you expect to rely on other expats? The worst thing about life as an expat is exactly what Mr. thaiptivateeye said. "the longer you are here, the more you seek out the 'value'. Not because you want to, because you have to, in order to survive.

Right Yurune every 5K km (5,000) typo error on my part. If the bros paid your BF everytime you found an error your dick would fall off. If I went to Eden every 5 km of travel my dick would fall off

Arcadius: "If you have a degree & do a TEFL course here (cheap), you can always get a job teaching English which will at least take care of ordinary living expenses. " Gak, now all those years busting my chops getting an education with Artificial Intelligence as my subject of interest and turn into an English Teacher.... oh, heavens have mercy. Also, I meant I'd stay in LOS after 5 years, hopefully for quiet some time. ÝIf my biz gets up and running by then. Regarding feeling as a foreigner... When I was growing up, I lived in Kuwait(with my parents), in Dubai, in Germany and in Singapore(boring, but clean). ÝActually, I like the hustle and bustle, in a strange way, the pollution and traffic and people all make me feel at home (anyone who is into Jap Animation will know what I mean), the dingy looking apartments, the street stalls, etc. Also, I am a loner in CanCan because most people are into stuff that don't interest me one bit, eg. Hockey games and baseball games on TV... yuk. ÝI do spend time at cafes, but it is all too boring. ÝWhen I was in HK, I went out every night with my friends(Hongkongese) and sometimes we just walked or ate from the streer vendors, I love that. ÝAlso, I love a certain air of fatalism one (atleast I did) experiences in Asian cities. I have a few friends, but the average Joe would consider them to be snotty and more like the Fraiser Cranes. ÝSorry, I am a f_cking elitist Also, I have some very close family friends in Chonburi. ÝAnyone heard of Dr. Suporn, the plastic surgeon? ÝHe is one of them. ÝPlease don't ask me how he makes his money, lets just say, he is a foremost surgeon in a certain field

Quote: from ComicNihilist on 7:18 am on Sep. 21, 2003 I don't want to be bonking day and night. ÝI just want to have the option of "just going into a MP while my car is being serviced" type of thing! Also, the weather in Asia suits me better and not just LOS. ÝI've stayed in Hongkong for about 3 months when I was a teen (sort of an exchnage student thing but only during the summer) and I couldn't wait to get up in the mornings. ÝNeedless to say, I had a blast in HK. I guess SE Asia feels a lot more vibrant and not like where I live. ÝDamn, nothing is walking distance, every house looks cookie-cutter same, the stores look pre-fab, uhhh, anyone seen the eyesore Walmarts. The only other place that's fun for me is Paris, but I am not a fan of their socialism shit. I mean, seriously, even if it was not for the p4p, I bet most of the expats find a lot of other things to keep them occupied. ÝHere, in Canada, we work all day, come home and park our butts in front of the TV, since going out regularly is either too expensive or there just aren't "cool" places to hang out. ÝThe whole social system is f_cked. ÝEveryone is getting more and more isolated. ÝAnd believe me, I am a loner, and I don't mix all that much and even then the height of isolation is getting ridiculas. Ý Most people are too stressed anyway. ÝIf everything goes as planned, maybe in a few (say 5) years, I could run my software dev business out of LOS That would be a dream come true, well sort of anyway. So, BKK seems to be a good option even if only for a few years. And again, I'm not looking for a life where I'll have sex with 10 women everyday and get drunk etcetera. ÝP4p would be like going to the moves once in a while
And to think that people in the UK dream of living in Canada ! can't be all that bad. A mate of mine lives in Quebec and seems to like it ?
