Probably not widely used, but I read a Wall Street Journal article years ago about a South American country (don't remember which one) which had repeatedly devalued its currency. The currency was devalued so much that people had to take a shopping "basket" full of money to the store to purchase anything because they couldn't carry all the worthless bills it took to buy something. Eventually they issued new currency that was worth 100 of the old bills for 1 of new bills.

nothing compared to the hyperinflationin germany in the 1920's. one had to have a suitcase of notes to buy a bread. in the hieght of this a bread was something like 1,000,000,000 marks and prices were adjusted hourly!
the conversion rate was something like 1:1,000,000!
Another story of inflation created after a war, it is just to easy for some governments starting to run the money printing machine to finance a war.

"Basket Case" is a very common expression to describe in this case an economy that is in an extremely difficult position.
It is also used to describe a hopeless person.
Not sure of the origin thou Mr Alan maybe correct with his theory.

Basket case was a term originally used in WWI for guys who got their legs and arms blown off. they thus needed to be carried about in a basket.
the technical term for countries where the currency is rapidly devalued is "f_cked".
usage - Argentina is really f_cked. Thailand was f_cked in 1997. The US is going to be f_cked soon. BTW if anyone out here knows for sure where the Baht is going to be in 6 months please PM me and we can make a basket full o money.

Hello all
The difference between 1 or 2 baht per dollar is really going to prevent some of you from NOT going to Thailand???
I base all my budget figures on 40 baht per dollar. If for some reason the baht is 38 baht per dollar I just cut something out of the budget.
Plenty of ways to make up for the 2-3 baht differance without takeing the fun outt of your Holiday.

Turns out the goverment decided to take action against the baht rise by not paying interest on foreign accounts. This made the baht tank against the dollar. I wonder what other actions the government will take if it rises again...
