MrAlan, I liked (and totally agree with) your point about tipping in the USA being totally different than everywhere else. ŬI was quite pissed off to get funny looks/snide comments in the states when leaving what I considered a decent enough tip. ŬWe (Europe) generally just don't do the 15% or 20% tip thing. ŬThen again, I didn't understand at the time, with the pittance the waiters & waitresses were earning in the USA, that they depended on their tips to make a living wage. Ŭ(still, ŬI hate feeling pressured to leave 15%) Also agree with AlterEgo's point of the tipping we do in places like LOS is as much for ourselves... the feelgood factor... than it is anything else. And I utterly and totally agree with Holy Saint about leaving the 20 baht daily for the chambermaids. Shit... I had better go disagree with people in other topics.. all this agreement isn't healthy, lol. Ŭ

X, yes if you tip less than 15% in US you will get some very dirty looks unless you can explain why the service was bad (the management would want to know about this). You just have to forget about tipping in EU and remember that service is not included in the price in the US. If service is bad, it is OK to tip less or even nothing if very bad. If you go to a buffet (where you get your own food) you can tip 10% (assuming the waiter brings the drinks and refills them, etc.).

If you pay 10% service charge to the hotel, that includes bellman service. My first time in Japan, the bellman actually refused the tip and told me it is included in the 10% service charge. Of course the hotel room in Japan was about $175, so that is $17.50 per day in service for bellman and maids, etc. I know they don't get all of that, but I assume their salary is determined with that in mind.

i visit LOS yearly n i always leave a tip of at least 10% for most non P4P services, be it the restaurants or taxis. i'm not rich or anything like that but i feel that those 10s of baht will make a diff 2 those i give n i won't even feel it if i were in my own c'try. for eg, consider the cheap n good food i get in LOS, even after leaving a "generous" tip, its still blardy cheap by my c'try's standards! so what the f*! no big deal, rite? imho.

Sure are alot of good opinions here. Myself I normaly have 2 or 3 cuties around one of wich would be considerd the main one. I'll draw 8 to 10,000 bhat at the start and it goes into my main cuties pocket and from that point on she handels all the finances for the rest of the day and night. I'm sure everybody is get what ever they deserve. It's a hell of a lot easier for me that way. The only time I worry about it is when I arrive and get to the hotel. After that it's up to my main cutie for the day. Hope that will help every one with a new perspective on how to tip...

I figure the most service I receive, outside of P4P, is from the maid - everyday. ŬRooms cleaned, fresh sheets, bathroom cleaned, etc. ŬI give 40-50 baht a day (one whole USD), usually given after the 2nd or 3rd day, and probably pay for the week all at once - say 300 baht (delay is to see if same girl cleans the room). ŬIn talking to them, they have a LOT of rooms to clean, and make around 4000 baht salary, plus maybe some food. For food, yes, leave the change, on instructions from Thai's, maybe extra 20. ŬIf it's somewhere I frequent, then maybe 40 baht - again, about 1 USD. Drinks, probably 10-20 baht, depending on how many I've had; agree, don't like the attempted manipulation of how many coins returned. ŬIf I really want to tip a waitress, I'll slip her a 20 discretely, directly into her hand (my understanding the general tips are pooled). Taxi's, just round off; to and from airport, I'll throw in an extra 50 - on arrival, just cause I'm now in-country; on leaving, just because it's always the god-awful 6am NW flight; anyone up at 3:30-4:00 waiting for a fare deserves an extra $1USD. But as my thai friends have told me, and mentioned here, not that big a deal.

Arcadius, Re: "I think Holy Saint's gesture of leaving 20B daily for the chambermaids is a nice one. These women are wretchedly underpaid, and it will make a difference to them. " Agreed, seems like a paltry sum to us, but it is much appreciated by them. As you know, 20B can pay for a whole dinner (5B sticky rice, 5B vegetables, 10B chicken at the local Isaan market). - Balls

I tip frequently in LOS. What's strange to me is the BGs' inconsistency on tipping. Example... On one taxi ride, I will tip the driver say 20 baht, but the BG will immediately ask for the money. Then on another ride, the same BG will allow the driver to keep the change. Huh?

if time permits in the future i will post an opinion on tipping in the us. i worked in an industry that had prevelant tipping for many years. people put too much thought into tipping and overtip in my opinion. but this is about thailand; earlier on, one of my thailand mentors who lives in thailand told me at the beginning, "you tip too much, tip to show appreciation for the service but not to pay for it." while one could make varying arguements on the above statement it does lend a certain perspective. tipping in los? yes i do, but not with abandon and not according to so called usa etiquette or not with the idea that i am really helping a disadvantaged sector. as my past thai language teacher use to say (and she had set up and managed three thai charity programs), if you really want to contribute to a thai's life, the last thing you want to do is give them money. while some want to instill a usa tipping practice, i have seen many thai service people literally excited by a small amount. one past girlfriend would tip maybe 10b for dinner in a restaurant but at times would tip nothing. her explanation?, "we dont have 10b (coin) so how can we leave a tip?" interesting how the thai mind works at times. cabs? i dont tip a cab driver unless i have made a special request. also, i have never even seen a thai cab driver hint at a tip nor have i seen a thai women tip a driver unless there was a special request made.
