i don't normally find myself in positions when a tip is expected. but when i do is it too much,is it not enough?. i don't tip the girls,i pay over the odds in the first place. when i eat in Thai places,i will leave a tip to round up the nearest 50,100,150 Bhat etc. 1 will always put at least 20 Bhat per day aside for each of the cleaners of my room and then leave the rest of my coins for them on my last day. i don't tip Taxi's,in shops and only in Bars if the bill is large. one drink, correct money but a bill of 640 Bhat will be rounded up to 700 Bhat. but i never know wether to give to direct to the Waitresss(does she keep it all,or has to put it with all the others)or just leave it on the plate. the only time i really tipped was with a lovely cigarette seller who was a lot of fun and i got to like her. she wanted 40 Bhat for a pck and i always gave her 50 Bhat. the last night in town i always gave her a tip of 100 Bhat. my biggest extravagance was the last night i ever spent in Patong. i wanted some roses to distribute among my friends and asked one of the girls selling them how much?. 100 Bhat for 10 i was told,so i asked how much for all of them. she tild me 1000 Bhat and i took them all. extravagant at the time, but in the end i had a bunch of 130 roses and while she may have lost money, there was no guarantee she would have sold 100 and she had the certainty of 1000 Bhat. but i think Addy007 was OK with his tip. in our country only £1 and for the service he describes full value. try getting service like that in London for that price.

What seems to be lost in this whole tipping thread IMHO is the "big picture". ÝNo, I also am not talking about "driving up the price for the locals", although I feel that it does affect it marginally. If tipping by the farang give him/her a karmic sense of satisfaction, then so be it. ÝIf they think that they're "helping" the unfortunate and so on and on... ÝMight as well be an NGO, big impact they are with their big ass expense allowance. ÝYeah I'm a bit sour. Ý:p ÝWhat I'm trying to say is, if you're expecting appreciation or gratitude from said "unfortunate", don't. ÝYou aren't gonna get any. ÝDon't believe me? ÝThe next time that kid comes around and you truly don't have any small bills so you don't tip. ÝThat kid'll basically say FU. ÝAll actions of past altruism forgotten. ÝThat's Thai appreciation/gratitude. ÝWelcome to Thailand... ÝIMO, they're angle is more of a "which farang sucker do I have to kiss up to today?" So if tipping makes one feel like a "better man" personally, fine. ÝBut also realize you just got owned by a 6 year old grifter. ÝMake no mistake, they're all playing a con to liberate you from your money. ÝTugging at your conscious is the oldest one of them...

Here is another one.... Remember when playing bar games was all the rage? Dice, jenga (or whatever its called) etc and the girls would want to play for money? Call me a hard headed prick, but if I win, I ALWAYS take the money. I dont like the presumption that the soft farang will hand over money if they lose and refuse to take it if they win. Lesson in life girls. Of course, my soft farang nature usually bought them a drink with the proceeds later but I like principle. What an asshole 555!!!

Everytime I cross Sukhumvit road via the Nana Station overpass, I get nailed by a beggar with what looks like leprosy. The last time I crossed, I noticed the young Thai guy who usually sits under the stairs on the landmark side and wears new addidas, bull shitting with the beggar while collecting his cut of the proceeds or maybe he is just collecting rent. Reminds me of the people sitting at the on-ramps in LA with the newborn in their arms and the proverbial cardboard sign. Plucks at your heart strings until you realize they rent the newborn by the hour and usually drive home in a newer car than I drive. I now cross Sukhumvit at Soi 3 / Soi 4 - depending if you are coming or going. Does this turn out to be an odd form of a tip? It certainly isn't really giving to charity............

Tipping should have little general effect on prices, because in a free market, the increased bounty will attract competition. In the West, being a waiter does not require any rare skills, nor is it a vocation, so the 'indifference principle' applies. If waiters began to earn large tips, then bus boys and dishwashers would become waiters. Restaurants require both waiters and dishwashers, so the wages are designed to attract both. Waiters and waitresses are gamblers, who are willing to accept a lower basic wage in exchange for the chance or earning a big tip, while the slightly higher but fixed basic wage of the dishwasher attracts those who prefer a regular income. If the incresed income from tipping were to become regular, then the dishwahers would leave the kitchen to become waiters.

For similar reasons, beggars are unlikely to be earing a large income. They may well hire the babies, and indeed the parlous state of the mothers seen in BKK is rather too theatrical to be taken at face value, but this does not imply that they are making a lot of money. Sitting in the LA or BKK sun must be a hard and stullifying way of earing an income. To test the stories concerning London's 'millionaire beggars', I spent quite some time observing them, and found that less than 1 in 20 of those passing gave any money at all. If the stories or fabulous earnings are true, then they must rely on a small but extremely generous minority. However, I would suggest that a few pounds an hour is typical. Thailand is not, unlike the USA for example, a society where tipping is usual, let alone expected. Most Thais who receive a tip from a farang, where the service received by the farang is no more than the usual, think the farang has more money than sense. Advice in this thread as to the appropriate amount to tip assumes wrongly that there is some sort of obligation to give a tip. There is no such obligation in Thailand. Unless there is some sort of exceptional service that cries out for recognition and reward no tip should be given.
