Just curious why you want to bring so much in cash? Be careful, pickpockets abound. I got PP'ed in Pattaya one night coming home from a 2-blow evening at King Kong. Luckily I lost only 200 baht and DL, Visa card and ATM which I immediately phoned in and everything was ok. Just a pain in the ass (no, not that kind...they weren't katoeys).

I have heard about an offer from AmEx: Just recently they issued a Traveller Cheque Card. Same advantages as (paper) TC's plus: You can draw money from ATM's (only those of Bangkok Bank - thats obviously the only cooperation partner of Amex in LOS so far). The card is not connected to your account (so no worries about that), you have to reload it again (by phone or web). Issuing Fee (as far as I remember) is 20 Euro, transaction fee is 2,50 Euro. Check their homepage for further info. Seems to me a nice addition to the paper TC's as you can get cash from the ATM and do not need to worry about exchanging notes.

This is usually not a good idea for hotels and other large purchases. Businesses must pay about 3% to AMX for credit card transactions, and many places want to charge you extra to use a credit card (sometimes 5% extra). Regular AMX TC's are still the best bet.

Mr. Alan, as far as I understood the conditions, this TC card cannot be used as a normal CreditCard; Consequently the % fees do not apply. You pay only what you would pay when cashing normal TC's (fees are the same than those for paper TCs). So you cannot use it for booking hire cars or make hotel reservations. It is more that what is known as a reloadable money card. You get your cash the same way you would hand in paper TC's. The advantages are: No need for paper TC and you can reload it easily by web or phone: Transfer from your account; so when you run out of money you call them, they transfer from your account in the UK to the TC card and you can get it the way you get your TC-cash in Bangkok (plus you could get it from an Bangkok Bank ATM). It is a new offering, I do not have it yet, but will take it as an addition to normal TC's to see how it works the next time.

The TravelFunds Card is a prepaid debit card. The TravelFunds Card can be used worldwide, but only with merchants and ATMs that accept the American Express Card. So your statement that it cannot be used as a normal credit card is false (with some minor exceptions that aply to all debit cards). In fact, it can only be used as a normal credit card (or more accurately a debit card with a fixed line of spending). Note that all AMX cards (including the TravelFunds Card ) can be used to withdraw cash from ATM's that accept AMX cards. Some merchants, such as car rental companies and hotels, may not permit you to reserve vehicles or accommodations by using the TravelFunds Card, but will permit you to settle your account with the Card. This is similar to the way all debit cards work (they are generally not accepted to reserve rooms or cars). The merchant must pay a fee (about 3%) for accepting the card, the same as all AMX cards. In most countries that accept credit cards, it is illegal to charge the customer extra for using it, but in Thailand, many merchants ignore the laws and demand up to 5% extra. In addition, if you get the card in US dollars (or Euros) and bring it to Thailand, American Express will make an additional profit on the currency exchange (usually about 2%). Here are the fees that the consumer pays (in addition to currency exchange fees that all AMX card holders pay) : $14.95 Issuance fee per Card $5.00 Reissue fee per Card $9.95 Express Delivery fee $2.50 ATM fee $5.00 Reload fee $10.00 Cancellation fee $15.00 Shortage fee $5.00 Paper Transaction History Request

Does Bangkok Bank have any ATM's in Pattaya? Not sure, can't find any on their web site. The AMEX TC card is a good idea but if you can't get cash out in Pattaya, it seems pointless.

The only advantage to a AmEx TravelFunds card compared with TCs is that you can use the card to make withdrawals at a limited number of ATM machines. Economically, you're better off buying and cashng TCs. I've specifically here of Thailand, where you can cash TCs on every block in the main tourist areas. In other countries, where there are more limited options for cashing TCs, the TravelFunds card could be worth the extra fees.
