As an emergency one could always resort to stashing a few K up the arse - just remember to remove it in private

RE: The hotel staff can steal stuff from the safety deposit boxes as someone posted about recently (they have extra keys). ***************** Take your own padlock, preferably one with a combination rather than a key. Don't let them see your combination. If it is one of those newer locks with the numbers in a row vs a dial, scramble the numbers before you sit it down the counter while you are opening the box.

Another handy trick is to buy a money belt of one of the stalls on suk. I got one on my last trip it looks like a normal black belt but has a zipper on the inside you can fit a few thousand baht in it

Ok I have a comment but also a q' so flame me if I'm outa line (apologies in advance). I've NEVER used TC's in all my years of travelling, just lots of cash and 1 or 2 CC as backup. BUT I don't want to use a CC in Thailand as 1) it's a place that 'skims' the info' given the opportunity 2) the wife has no idea I'm going there - CC statements are a giveaway! (Yes I know you're all terribly shocked, sorry to lower the tone of the site guys). So this time I'm thinking TC's are the way to go and intend to get some for the first time. I'm on a fixed ticket so if I only take cash and lose it I'll literally starve until departure date. As I'm in Japan now, can I take AMEX "Yen" TC's? Or should I get US$ ones? I don't really want to change Yen->USD->Thb then back again (whatever'sleftover). Is offering a Yen TC to pay a hotel bill going to be a problem (and is doing this to get Thb change a good way to get local cash) ? I'm sure Japanese must expect to do this. Here's the other thing. I'd like to leave the passport with my important Japan work visa in it (and emergency funds) somewhere, then carry ANOTHER passport I have (plus budgetted spending money) on me. Are lockers at Don Muang good for this? Or can you trust the front desk safe in a hotel like Nana? In the unlikely event that I lose everything I'm carrying I still want to be able to live and get back to Japan. All comments welcome, F.

If you have US dollars, then you should get US dollar TC's if possible. If you already have Yen, the TC's in Yen is OK. Get large denomination TC's because their is a fee for cashing each check, regardless of how large it is (I believe it is 30 baht). You don't ever want to pay your hotel bill with TC's. The exchange rate will be a gigantic rip-off, if they even accept them. You just go to a local bank or money exchange booth and get Baht for your TC’s. They are all over the place, and sometimes so close together you can shop for the best exchange rate. The ones at the airport are not as good of an exchange rate as in town, so only exchange what you need for the first day in the airport. You should keep you valuables in a safe inside your hotel room. If you have two passports, carry the one with the Thailand entry visa with you (in case the police ask for your passport) and keep the other in your hotel in-room safe.

I have a question that maybe some of the expats might be able to answer. My question is the exchange rate going to change dramatically whether up or down from the 1st of april to the middle of april when thai new year starts. Just wondering if I should try and convert more US dollars at the beginning of my trip or just check the exchange rates daily and see if some better rates come up.

If anyone really knew the answer to that, they could bet their life savings on currency futures and be a multi-millionaire. But let’s not limit ourselves to predictions about currency valuation. How about the stock market, sporting events, or other things that we could all bet on (and loose our ass).
