While I agree on these figures as being ''GENERALLY" correct for comfortable lifestyle, there is another point to be added. Were you forinstance living in the country north (as I do ) the ability to actually spend that amount of money is at times not presented. I manage to as we run about back and forth to bangkok. But for the older readers thinking of a country quiet retirement 40,000 a month would provide a high living standard. Food is considerably cheap, as are ""all"" the services that you might request or desire. If you have a comfortable home and already set up. Even a Thai wife will have change of 500-600 baht a day shopping. And alcohol aside (which is cheap) theres nothing to dabble your baht in. I manage to go through 80,000 a month but really that encludes parties and the odd P4p up in Chang rai, and a two day bash in Pattaya once a month. Bottom of the barrel stuff, english teachers are living on 20,000 a month in Pattaya. An aircon room for 6500, and 5000 food, and 2000 alcohol, and perhasp 12 short times at 500 a pop. Its not an attractive option. But if your hooked on pussy alot take that existence for a year or two. As do many retired pension recipiants getting their 30,000 to 50,000 a month cheques. But agreed that 50,000 is comfortable north. And double that also for cities. But note Pattaya can be comfortable including weekend p4p at 75,000 a month. : :

Thanks, DG. I have 7-9 years before I retire and live there. There being Chiang-mai or Buriram/Surin areas. Your figures are what I was figuring. When my wife and I went there, things were cheap even when we were helping with the relatives.

I definately think you need to live in a city - building a nice home on the TGs land out in "Ban Nok" soon gets very boring - and a good way to go stir crazy ! Buriram is a non event really, but Surin go's OK. I did manage the Thong Tarin hotel many years ago ; You can get a nice townhouse in a block there for around 600,000 - and if your TG is from that region, probably speaks Khamen, and would not feel all that comfortable in the North... The thing is to buy a vehicle, and take frequent trips around the country -

TPE, lol I grew up in a town of 32 people. I like country living and enjoy the country ways of life and its quietness. But I agree getting out often is the key. I will also have my own things to do. I am an avid woodworker/cabinetmaker and have already bought some logs and had them milled. Her Dad has it stored and it should be nicely seasoned when I get there. I could very, very easily spend my days with sawdust and shavings around my feet. My job will allow me to do some remote "unprogrammed professional" work time so am not too worried about going stir crazy. Anyway, we shall see. We could always move if we wanted to. Thanks!

Hogun, Do not forget that as a military retiree you will also have medical coverage. It will be HMO/Insurance style but that benefit is usable anywhere in the world. Check with the military attache at the Embassy to get details of which hospital to go to and how claims are made. As for the rest, unless you plan to hobnob in the highest levels of Thai Society your pension will give you a much better life here than you could ever hope for in the US (and LOS is a hell of a lot more stable than PI)....

Depends on the number of years served and rank. If one serves 20 years they get 50% of their base pay If one serves 30 years they get 75% of their base pay. For example a Major with 20 years service will have a retirement pay of about 3K a month. An mid-level NCO with 20 years service would receive 1750 per month...

Thanks CS, read Ur answer yesterday and grabbed for reasonnable comparisons. Couldn't find them... Still trying to figure out wether military in the states are getting a high salary or close to the ones in Western Europe. Otherwise 150K/month + good medical coverage seems indeed quite a safe net if one is looking for a peaceful retirement in LOS, again if U avoid the (exciting) pochest levels of BKK 's life
