For a start Issaan references only apply to one half of northern Thailand...... eastern (not the Chiang Mai..Chiang Rai side)
Having lived 80 kilometers from Chiang Rai in a rural area, I have to laugh at most of whats been written here by most (in good faith).
2 million Baht is alot in that region.
The land (with Thai woman) and house and materials in prime beautiful farming country will set you back 1 million if you want a farang 3 bedroom home with modern features and lots of space.
But comfortable homes (made of concrete and good teak woods) are alot less, at 500,000 -upwards.
A nice Thai style home open plan can be bought at 250,000 in those parts, and that again spent adding and renovating to it.

Anyhow thats outside the big towns.

As for making your remaining 1 million stretch?

If your with a woman, * (and there are plenty of willing professional girls in banks and offices in little towns that want a farang) Businesses are cheap.
I own 3 of such in a place an hour out of Chiang Rai called Phan.
My total investment was 22,000 australian dollars.
The businesses are simple but reliable ventures.
A beauty salon......a Noodle resturant.....an internet/ cafe and games.
Staff wages are often reduced by getting Family of girl to run it wholesale. The exception being Salon.
Profits are small, but incentive to grow is given by setting them a (pay in only)
I get about 50,000 baht back a month.
And I have this paid into my account as I am back in Australia.
I also get 10,000 a month repayments for a house that will built but relationship failed.
On average a hair salon can be bought for 200,000 in those parts.
50,000 a month is plenty.
Chang beer is 350 baht a case.
Food is dirt cheap.........Pork 50baht a kilo
Fish (farmed) 30 baht a kilo
vegies fruit (laughably cheap)
Rice 10 baht a kilo
new motor bike 25,000 (125)
Dish satelite 15,000 to buy and set up.
I was as happy as a pig in shit there, and will definately recommend it.
The Nay sayers really dont know the costs.

Even if you wanted to dwell in places like the golden triangle (very beauiful but closer to Mai sai ) or Chiang Rai....rental of a place with air con is 4000 a month.
Do the Math!

Want to write a book and f*** uni girls til the money ends...... (or never does)
In Chiang Mai places like Baan Thai appartments (that have a pool and air con cable) are 5400 baht a month.
even if you screwed a uni girl from the nearby University every Friday and Saturday night only at 1000 a night.
And was good mid week. And on a 300 baht a day allowance for eating. And 300 for entertainments.
Your expense would read something like this.

Monday_FRiday.......300 baht food
300 baht entertainments
Total for this ^600 Times 5
3000
Weekend Drinks at Bar 1500 baht
resturants 1000 baht
uni girl for two nights 2000
total 4500 baht

So your looking at 12,000 a week or 48,000 a month
plus.....................1000 fuel for bike
7000 rent (including utilities)
1000 mobile
and visa in Mai sai 1000 includes bus and 5 american dollars at border costs (i know much cheaper than cambodia) add 2000 for clothes.

Grand total is 60,000 baht a month.

Your 2 million would last 33 months!
If you bought a business at 500,000 your likely to stretch this out to 4-5 years (ie laundry)

But Far north 2 million is enough to disappear a very long time.

The ideal amount to never worry is 5 million. (at least) But living Thai (you could last forever in theory) But recommend you have Farang comforts at least Satilite dish, internet, and good house.
I just inherited a house.
So when I go it will be in a few years (with about 15-20 million)
But sure if you wanted to escape thats about the facts.

Yes, got to take notice of a guy that moves to Los, loses it all and has to run back home, father mysteriously dies, convenient. Then makes plans in few years to try again.

Exemplary example.

I think DG has it right.
But if you are that far far away you do need some contact with the falang world, if only to remind yourself how lucky you are not to be locked into it.
I retired into deep rural France first time around in 1991.
My mistake was having no TV.
I felt cut off once the novelty wore off and I settled into everyday life.
I missed news from home, sports etc etc. and village gossip isn't enough.
And no uni girls to climb over.

Big thanks to you DG for sharing this with us !

BTW, what is it that members cannot live without TV ? I haven't watched TV for years. Cannot judge if the programs are that much better now than years ago. Just my 2 cents.

Its cool guys.

I expect pathetic bitch crap from some quaters here (that guys comment only reveals the depth of his soul)

I didnt loose everything (though did drop $14,000 when relationship failed...my fault) the income I still get will over time recoup this. And the girl is honest enough to repay 50% of the house total at 10,000 a month.
Her family (sisters and brother in law, auntie all still work for me)
My father had Bowel cancer but kept it quiet til the very end (last fortnight).........i regret the lost time I could have shared.

The north is very Isolated in rural areas, and I remember the feeling of going to Chiang Rai each week as being a relief to drink with a Farang while my girl shopped.
Satelite Tv is a must, and also if you ride about other villages you will find some other farang nearby.
But ultimately its the cheapest option to live well.
We even had people do chores all day (as a sought of charity to some) a fatherless mother would wash clothes and cook lunch, in return for a soild meal to takeaway for her child and herself. (even though we didnt need her) Another would fetch things and be like a servant, cleaning windows in between.
Yowl (who I helped die) was farm hand, and would rise at dawn and work til 6pm. He also made a daily bon fire for me to light at dusk. I should have listerned not to pay him anything (white whiskey induced a stroke)
But point is that its a very poor rural area.
You will find that when your riding your motor bike through the lime green rice fields that girls after a few weeks wave at you.
Some (not all) will hint that they smoke.
Do blow for you?
They earn 100 baht a day.
And sure I will get howls for it here, but have admitted to letting a few smoke me in a hut at drink breaks for 300 baht. (twice what she asked for)
Professional woman in rural towns (that dont get to meet or see Farangs) will openly flirt for your attensions.
Its a big ego trip being the only Farang when you go to the little town of 2000 -3000 people for something.
I was at the foothills of the mountains and some storms would be amazing to watch monsoonal times.
The love also village families extend to each other is really something also.
I got to know girls who were lovely creatures devoted to buddha and sibblings and parents, faced with the hardships and make off for Bangkok at 18 years of age.
Songran they would return and no one would ask too many questions seeing family improvements, dispite noticing their walk was more pivotal then before, and the clothes less modest.
Occansionally one would bring one (a farang home at a village nearby) within a month another 20 girls would disappear to try her luck south.
This is Thailands welfare system folks.
Mum and Dad and little babes depend on big sis scoring a job or doing the fields, and sometimes if needs be, making that hard decesion to go be a "hooker" (see waitress or dancer/singer) Pattaya/Bangkok.
Their yearly income peasants is less than (50,000) 1000 baht a week.........professional people get double this only.
So a Hooker (if your pretty enough) to be a successful one, can boost the families outlook alot.
Thats why often new bargirls or Go Go girls actually thank you when you are droolingly bar fining them, to them they are picturing the support of family.
When I liked a girl, I would often stop by a Toy store then post office and send away a gift to her much spoke about younger sibbling. (the sex got better)
These are just Farmers daughters, many are sweet nice girls, underserving of whore tags.
Its ashame alot become hardened to that sad world.
But unfortunately the world north without that support is so much harder for them and family.
They are in my view frontline troops against human poverty.
And dreams do come true sometimes. The little villages are full of girls who once worked and made enough to buy something (shop..house)
Some snag a farang.
Like I said "non hookers" hit on you.
Your basically a better man to marry.
Whats the repugancy of this anyhow?
Recently my soon to divorce brother from the states who owns a factory, asked me "dont you kinda get disturbed paying poor Thai girls to hang out and f***"?
I said "not as disturbed as I would be paying off some Bitch half of everything back in the states on the marriage death"
I went on that at least I was providing for mouths, in a sought of pay as you go situation, not unlike the big bills you guys get when divorces loom.
I pointed out that in Thailand it cost me $10 to do so.
Financially dependant marriages with a good degree of respect and affection based in thailand often last and endure well.
Difference is Amigo that when I am 50 I will be most likely enjoying a new young wife and family, and not tolerating a change of life menopausal attack based on a hot feminist flush of rage. f***ing some slag pussy, and dispensing with credit card bills in their envelops too frightened to look at the damage that she has done.
Petite gentle love at days end in some rural town in tropical Thailand will do me.

DG, i'm curious as to why you don't go back there immediately. You say you've never been happier there than before. You say you've just inherited a house. You say 2m is enough to disappear for a long time, and 5 million is enough to be rich. You also say you generate 50k a month from three small businesses.

I have no reason to doubt any of that.

What I can't understand is - given all that - you prefer to stay in Australia, earning half a living piloting a tugboat on Sydney Harbour, and f***ing fat australian women in Byron Bay, or letting paraplegics blow you in North Sydney.

I'm not flaming you.. I just don't understand. Can you explain please. In English, if you don't mind.

As to the OP. While I defer to DG's greater wisdom in the costs of life up north, I think the OP needs to consider the fact that he is a Thailand newbie and that 2m isnt enough. You might be able to disappear for 4-5 years, especially if you don't buy a house and pay 4-5k rent a month... sure.. you can have a half decent life on that.

But what then? You don't say how old how old you are? What will you do if and when the money runs out? If you're relatively young and driven you could probably find some employment - a teacher or a small business - and then things would be different. Do you have a state pension you can look forward to?

In another thread I read you implied I bumped off my father for the inheritance last week...........your a class act.........
As for scobies answers.........Dad got sick, theres alot of work to do on the lennox House.
I also have a Thai girl arrivving here this July or August on a visa.
My kids want me here a while, and things are looking up.

I will get back to Thailand a few times each year.
And sure recommend the north.

But now I have committments and responsibilities and a nice beach house to work on.
When I am done in Ausstralia I will make a more considered move back.
