The problem with IT consulting in Thailand is that you're probably used to making about 10 times the going rate there. I did have the idea to start an IT consulting service based in Thailand but working in (relatively) nearby higher cost areas, like Singapore, ANZ, NEA, etc.

I have done a bit myself in Asia and getting paid is a big issue, plus there is not a lot demand in LOS. You would need to focus more on SGP, I also found the Manila quite productive. But the smart money is now in China if you can cope with the languages.
What type of consultancy are you talking about? I have been doing this four about 4 years and next week I am in LOS for a series of meetings where I am selling my own Lotus Notes based applications. The idea is sell the software cheap and make your money with the added consultancy and the have a ball at the weekend!

No offense taken. If you have IT skills then you have excellent opportunities here. The main reason I enjoy teaching (other than the girls!) is the paid time-off I get, and that would be very difficult to achieve working 9-5 at a company. BK is right, my salary is low and I could be making 50K a month teaching spoiled rich kids at an international school, but that's not what I want to do.

I know that my salary is low, but I didn't move here to endure the same stress as I had in L.A. I am looking to start a side business to supplement my income though. I have some money in my 401k in the US, and a small Federal government pension and Social Security (if it's still around) to draw upon when I'm old.

AT, So long as you are happy, it doesn't really matter what you are earning. And yes, being able to teach girls and get paid for it is definitely a great job.

My expertise ranges from Oracle developer to .net . I was thinking more along the line where we can get a contract from U.S or Europe and hire local programmers in Bkk to set up the software development/outsourcing shop. My previous company is sourcing out most of their development to Indian programmers now.. If we can find the good talent in thailand then we can start something there as well...

Kenny, if you work for an English language portal in Thailand, then fluency in English would be essential and a plus for you. Forget about creating Thai language websites, this is a job for the locals, which you should not/cannot apply for.
