Thanks Blonk and Valetta for presenting both sides of the medal. That was helpful.

Yes, no obligation to give tip here.

For taxi, Thais pay the exact amount on the meter (they carry changes). I round up or sometimes pay 10-20 Baht extra...give little more if I go to the airport.

For restaurants and hotels, you see that they charge VAT and service charge. I guess that service charge is like tip for the staff.

I am not so sure that there is no obligation in Thailand to tip. Almost every time the bellboy takes me to my hotel room (and I have experienced this at different hotels) he would draw open the window curtains, turn on the TV set, turn on all lights, the aircon, etc and then linger around with a direct look into my eyes. And then only a 20 baht note will help him to leave with that smile still intact. As for me, I hate to see people lose their smile.

In the gogos, if the girls have been good and devoted (which they mostly are) they are usually thrilled with a 100 baht note when I leave (not including other payments for special services). And the waiters, who bring back the change on settlement of the bill, make sure there are a few 10 baht coins on the plate -- the hint to you is to leave those coins behind.

The net result of tipping, of course, is simply this : they are all happy to see you when you go there the next time.

Valetta is correct as a general matter, tipping is not expected or necessary in much of Thailand, especially in simpler restaurants, lodgings, etc.

But in most of the P4P, entertainment, falang-oriented areas, as Kaymanx points out, it is most definitely expected, and if dispensed properly, will be rewarded. For example, I always tip each girl at the salon who takes care of me a 100 baht. In this I do not think I am excessive or unusual, and I have been treated like a king there for many years. I also tip the chamber maid who cleans up my room by leaving some larger change on my pillow, especially if I am staying for a longer period of time. It just makes sense.

I only wanted to chime in on the two sides of this coin by adding that even where tips are typically expected (especially in the p4p world), do NOT tip if the service was lousy. This applies to gogo's as much as soapies. A tip in LOS is truly that, a reward for good service, so don't get into the habit of thinking that every TG who rubs your leg a little while she sips her 150 baht LD and stares vacantly at the stage instead of paying attention to you deserves a tip on top of her drink. Or that you have to tip the star fish soapie girl just because she lay there and let you f*** her.

Kaymanx,by all means tip the bellboy if you think it is the only way to preserve a smile you find attractive.

Like you I have experienced the same conduct from bellboys.Indeed it is so common as to be regarded as standard bellboy behaviour. It is transparently designed to extract a trip for doing no more than a bellboy is supposed to do.

I find it manipulative, and I do not like to be manipulated.I find the behaviour of waiters you describe as equally manipulative, and neither approach wins a tip from me.

On the other hand I agree that "good and devoted"attention from gogo girls deserves a tip because it amounts to a special service that should be recognised.

Tipping is basically paying more than the asking price, and seen in this light it should be limited to the occasion where what the customer receives is in some way special.

Where tipping is expected for every ordinary service it provides an excuse for employers to underpay staff in the expectation that tips will make up the difference.

It also encourages the bellboy and waiter behaviour you describe which is really a form of intimidation designed to make the customer feel uncomfortable unless he gives a tip.

There is really nothing good to be said about tipping that justifies the practice to be encouraged in Thailand.

TVN - are you saying that the service is included in the bill in restaurants, like it is in Europe? I usually add a bit to round up the number, but I assume that the waiter got a basic 15%.

As for the other areas, thanks for the precisions guys, I get the idea.

Quim,I also generally leave a tip for the chamber maid even if her service is in no way exceptional because I know how poorly chamber maids are paid.It is enough if she is cheerful, and reasonably competent.

I am especially likely to leave her a tip if she behaves in a way that suggests that no tip is expected.

In most every restaurant in tourist areas now there is an automatic 10% added to the bill for tips that is supposed to go to the staff. This removes the requirement to leave a tip.

I find it does not guarrentee good service, and with no control over whether you tip, or not, for good service. I refuse to go to places that automatically add 10% to the bill for service.

There are a number of restaurant managers/owners that keep this money. Be sure you read the fine print on the menu, and go as far as ask if there is a service charge added, and who it goes to. I have been in 2 restaurants on sukhumvit soi 8 that did not list the charge on the menu, but still added 10% extra to the bill. This is how some restaurants raise their prices without showing it on the menu, and it is now rampant around lower sukhumvit restaurants. It is real hard to find a restaurant in that area that hasn't added the extra 10% for service charge.

Even a bar does (did) that on ladydrinks (Livingstones, Soi 33).

Personally I do not stick to a tip 'standard'. It depends how big the bill is or how much is left until a reasonable amount.

It might happen that I tip THB 15 on a THB 85 bill, but only THB 5 on a THB 235 bill. If I have the correct amount, I do not pay more than the bill.
