I think all depends on what people want! lets say you retire at 50 might be 40 or 60 if you want the nice executive lifestyle condo in the city or big house with maid, couple cars, nice restaurants everynight, clothes, some bling, and truely live in high grade around bangkok then you will need 400.000 bht around 10k usd! now of course this is living VERY large! but once you have a house paid for, and car, then there is no reason why 125.000 is not good either with a nice lifestyle 3KUSD a month in thailand will do fine for a single man.. im sure that person is not going to go out everynight to expensive hotel restaurants and buy 1000USD dollar suits every month etc.. now city life VS country life.. buy a nice house down in Krabi, or samui on the beach ccar. bike, set it up with nice furniture, 5000USD will take you along way! and 10Kusd will have you living like a rockstar!! so im sure you can retire VERY nicely with 10K im sure many peole will be happy with 3000 or 4000USD also as long as its gurantee imcome for the rest of your life.. 3000USD is fine for some old timers.. now if you are thinking of retiring at age 40! then of course you will need some serious coin if you want to party hard in the luxery circle.. me! I would retire with 400.0000 bht anyday!! 10K a month!! come on!!! who wouldnt!!! I couldnt spend all that money!! I would end up making more money with it.. man 120KUSD a year is plenty to retire on in many countries! especially thailand!! thats king living in LOS!

I am moving in the next few months. My stats here are all UK related so may be different from USA. I am 45 and married Thai gal 4 years ago and now have 2 wonderful kids - they are actually the biggest consideration. Due to high growth in UK property prices I have £240,000 equity in my home (quick sale may lower this). £100,000 from my share of a business and about £25k savings. All in all a total of around £350,000 (approx 24m baht). My intentions are approx as follows 5m for house 5 million in business in Thailand (already have two) The interest rates, even on current accounts, in Thailand are higher than I am used to here but cannot be relied on to stay that way. Serious considerations are Health Insurance - BUPA is available in Thailand and I am informed is around 7000 a month for "family" cover but I am not sure about that price - perhaps someone could confirm. Schools - Good International (and I mean a good one not the ten a penny ones) school is about 14,000 baht per kid per month. This is actually my biggest dilemma, not just in terms of costs but also the nagging uncertainty of whether the move is actually better for them. I would actually anticipate a monthly income of around 200,000 actually spent. The rest goes away for the kids. The last point is important if you either have kids already or MAY have after you move. Selling Thai busineses will not raise much more multiples than initial purchase price however well it does so the best way to secure their future in Thailand is to pass on businesses or cash. I know many will say that kids should look after themselves but even the best education and jobs in Thailand can be low paid especially for 21 - 23 year olds. Having looked into this for over 3 years now I think that with no overheads for rent I can have a great life on 200,000 a month - and hopefully a good future for my family. I would assume that pro-rata 100,000 (with no rental overheads) would do likewise for a single guy. Andy

Now that's gonna happen to you when you don't properly set up your financial situation before taking the plunge. Or you may end up as a farag beggar. Up to you. http://www.pattayacitynews.net/news_11_06_48.htm "English man attempts suicide inside his Suwattana Garden Home. Police and rescue workers received a frantic call for assistance from Khun Gaew aged 27, the girlfriend of Mr. James William Campion from England. She reported that her boyfriend had attempted to take his life using razor blades. We joined rescue workers as they entered house number 38/132 inside Suwatanna Garden Homes in Soi Neun Pleub Wan. Inside the master bedroom, rescuers discovered Mr. Campion. A large pool of blood next to the bed and obvious self-inflicted lacerations on his arms and neck indicated that he required urgent medical attention. He was taken to the Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital where he is expected to recover from his injuries; however he is now under close supervision from psychiatric staff. The reason behind the suicide attempt, according to Mr. Campion was a lack of money causing him to become depressed to the extent of him attempting to end his life."

I think all you guys are too rich for normal thinking ( please hand me the extra cash you don't need) The numbers you are flicking around here could get you a pretty upper class life in Australia. For Thailand I would make the moove on 80,000BHT per month assuming I already owned my apartment/house and said sum was indexed to inflation,,, gee look at that,, that is my pension amount almost exactly and yes its indexed

the 80k should be fine Mel... but what about your monthly Botox injections, your Liver transplant, heart bypass, and of course the cost of viagra 555555 !! - Agree - 80k would be nice to get along on, if you owned an apartment, and didnt have any unforseen, especially sickness, problems.

I think it has more to do with your current life style. I would never move anywhere if it meaqnt lowering my current standard of living. It would be far easier to take multiple trips to LOS every year and earn decent money in your home country. Now before anyone starts in about the cost of airfare, etc., I shold say that if someone earns around $200,000 US these trips are really not that big of a deal. But, try to earn even $100k in LOs..... hard to do.... SO I decided to stay in the U.S., do my thing and go to LOS 6-8 times per year. It keeps it fresh and exciting. Now you have a slightly different problem, the kids. Brin them back to your home country. Start over there with your nest egg. Just my opinion.

I agree. That is why I live in Singapore, my quality of life is as good as it was in LA sans the dirt and crime...

The key when calculating amount of $$ required for retirement is to remember your costs escalate as you get older. If you could happily live on $1k USD per month at the age of 60, you'll probably need $3k USD by the time you're 75. So you better plan on having either children to support you or plenty of extra savings.
