I have a check from Chase Manhatten Bank made out to me. Can I endorse it to a Thai National and have it deposited to her acct? If so, how long before it clears and is actually in her acct?

Most banks require a WP. Although Kasikorn Thai and Bangkok Bank have been noted for accepting applications without one.

BellaItalia Try Bangkok Bank. They seem to be the most liberal. No work permit required. Just bring along your passport. Tyler, a foreign check normally clears within a month, but you get charged US$ 10 initially and US$ 20 when it clears. Google used to send US$ checks, but I just found out that they do Thai Baht too! Whoopee! Additionally, if the bank officer knows you, it can even clear within a couple of hours.

Many banks will open a "Savings" account with merely your passport. "Checking" accounts generally require work permits. With a savings account, you can get an ATM card as well and might even get the odd baht or two added in the form of interest.

I've had good dealings with Siam Commercial Bank previously. If one bank knocks you back then try another, even another branch of the same bank that just knocked you back. If you have a reasonable amount to deposit and the first person declines to open an account then ask to speak to their superior but keep it smiley and friendly at all times, dress nicely, smell good and you never know your luck. If you still get a refusal then politely ask where the nearest branch of an opposition bank is, l've heard of that working before. Eventually a bank will agree to open an account for you, even without a work permit. You can open an account with 500 baht as stated before, but l'd be thinking that it might be easier if you had a larger amount to deposit. A Visa Electron card should be easy to get if they open an account for you although the one l have is just a debit card not a credit card. I would not want a Thai issued credit card for two reasons. Firstly if you want to use it for internet purchases than they are often declined. Secondly, and most importantly, as far as l know if someone clones or gets hold of your Thai issued credit card and makes charges to it, you are 100% liable for all charges made. My overseas card was recently it seems cloned while l was in Malaysia (only used it the one time) right in front of me somehow and $1000 later charged to it in Tokyo. The card company put a stop on my card, rang me to ask if l had used it in Tokyo, then replaced it with a new card in Thailand within 2 days. I just had to sign a statement saying l hadn't been in Tokyo and that was it, no cost to me apart from a little inconvenience in sorting out some scheduled payments. These days it's easy to pay your bill by transferring money on the internet so l'm better off keeping my home card, no advantage for me in having a Thai issued card.

Would Bank of Asia count? (Well, it's UOB now). I have never experienced that, and I have spent thousands of dollars on the internet. Okay, Apple iTunes would not take cards from Thailand (that's okay, I have my US card), and another one was AmericanSingles.com. I have also had some fradulent charges on my card, and after disputing it, it was removed, but only after a couple of months.

Internet usage is a problem l'm told by Thai friends, can't recall any particular Thai bank. Twice l used my own card to pay for some overseas purchases when they said they couldn't get their own card accepted (they paid me upfront). I've heard similar stories about Malaysian cards as that is supposedly the world hot spot for dodgy credit cards. After getting stung after using it just the one time l can believe it. Apple iTunes l think has a problem with any non US card or at least it did, that might be slowly changing now. Thai banks doing nothing to follow up on fraudulent charges and simply letting the cardholder wear it is a story l've heard many times. No personal experience myself other than whenever l've disputed any type of charge in Thailand it has usually been very difficult to sort things out, even when you have all the paperwork for what seems to be an open and shut case. Still shaking my head over a small dispute with my local cable operator who somehow cannot see my account is paid up even when l produce their own signed and dated receipts. I think my mistake was to pay for 3 months up front instead of the usual one month, now, one month later they're saying l have to pay again.
