TU, my wife just told me about 6000 people getting laid off...huge exporting fabric biz in samoot pra karn, brang plee.. It sucks that my wife is just basking in the fact the new gov't isnt any better than thaksin's...she is unhappy but the fact I was wrong gives her a bit of satisfaction lol! I have posted on this thread about how angry she is about the fact the 1K she sends back a month is lower and lower,...to say she is pissed off about the current situation is an understatement... she is actually bitching about it in bed as I type this as she says to me so adorably "what do I do?" will this change???? and if not I dont see tourism increasing in the future... atl

Quote: from ThaidUp on 12:40 am on July 12, 2007 Thai Silp owners apologise Pipat Unopas and his wife, Yawalak, owners of Thai Silp South East Asia Import Export Co Ltd, apologised to all workers who were out of job following the abrupt shutdown of the garment factories. In tears, Pipat said that he would do everything to help all workers. "The baht was so strong against the orders that we took in 3-4 months in advance. We had tried to solve the problems, but it came to the point that we can't continue the business. I have to apologise to all workers, but I will do everything to help them," he said. The owner showed up in Samut Prakan. After the negotiation, initially, workers will be paid compensations worth 6 months of their salary. The company's closure of 3 plants yesterday immediately pushed about 5,000 workers out of job, due to huge losses. Workers demanded the compensation issues. About 3,000 workers still continue the road blockade, waiting for the negotiation results.
This is exactly the reason why the US government wants a lower dollar--to increase manufacturing jobs at home. This is the same reason that many Asian countries have artifically tried to keep their currencies undervalued. In places with highly-valued currencies like the EU, unemployment is quite high. This makes the labor unions stronger and there are often laws in these countires making it hard to fire or layoff workers even when needed for efficency of the company. This in turn makes it very unattractive for companies to set up operations in these EU countries, which has the long term efect of actually hurting employment. A company is more likely to hire employees if it knows it can fire them at will. This is the same reason that auto manufcturing jobs (including BMW and Mercedes) are moving to the southern parts of the US, where labor laws are more friendly to businesses. The US economy is doing very well despite the lower dollar. Corporate profits are up, and the stock market is higher as a result of that. It just means that traveling overseas is more expensive, but that only affects a relatively small percentage of the population. People on this forum obviously tend to only be concerned about the bhat to USD exchange rate as the primary indicator of economic strength in the US, but nothing could be further from the truth.

The workers suffer again,, whilst the Chinese Thai's who have a monopoly ( well almost) get even more money as their profits in Baht buy more $US, Euro etc. I believe Thailand is at a cross-road,, this protectionism on land ownership and different rules for Foreign companies simply is unacceptable by modernised economies. Basically its time for Thailand to decide if they want to be Third world or a part of the major world economy. Seeing workers in labour intensive areas such as Textiles, lose their jobs, is sad but it was always going to happen. I did suggest some time ago that Thailand was in big trouble from competition from Vietnam. Guess what, the Viethamese "Dong" is basically tied to the US$, so they have become some 20% cheaper in exports than the Thai products in just the last year or so. Thailands future depends on the next election and the decisions of the elected government. If they continue their protectionism on land ownership etc, then I'm afraid they will quickly slip back into third world mode. Even worse,, if Vietnam opens up more quickly Thailand is a "shot duck". It could be good news to some of us, in that the BAHT would suffer a dramatic turn around Mel.

TEXTILE INDUSTRY EMPLOYEES PROTEST OVER SHOCK CLOSURE Factories to reopen after promises of help http://www.bangkokpost.net/News/index.php A clothes manufacturing company that abruptly shut down its factories this week leaving over 5,000 employees jobless is set to resume production today after being promised financial assistance from the Thai Garment Manufacturing Association (TGMA). Thai Silp goes back to work http://www.bangkokpost.net/breaking_news/breakingnews.php?id=120114 (BangkokPost.com) -.... Following talks with the Labour Ministry, Pipat Unopas and his wife Yawalak, owners of Thai Silp, both agreed to resume their business operations on Friday. They also warned that the company may continue to suffer from liquidity problems due to the strengthening of the baht. ___________________________________________ This factory is not far from where the in-laws live in Bang Phli. The fall-out is enormous in terms of flow-on effects to others when these things occur. Suppliers, contractors, reduced spending etc etc. Yes, the Government has fixed this one this time - what happens next time? The big question "Is this an isolated failure or the indicator of a coming trend?" I'm keeping the spare cash in Oz dollars for now...enjoy.

Basically the average Vietnamese worker has better work ethics and does his superior work load for less. They only lack the infra-structure that Thailand has, but with the large investments now flowinbg in, that should be done within 3 years. A change of of colour from Red to elections would be a HUGE boost also, I would think that is less than 10 years away. The Vietnam stock market is also looking very lucrative. YOMV ( Your Opinion May Vary). Regards Mel.
