Hi all,
I sometimes think that I over tip because I never really stay in thailand for a long trip...usually five days.  I guess I would tip less and less if I have to stay there a month or more.  I would also get use to the tipping habits over there.  I don't tip a lot to show off but really want to reward them.  It seems like every person treated me special compared to the standard service I get in the US.

I'll go with BK on this one.  I had an eye infection one day and my driver really helped me out.  At the same time he was really nice and polite to my TG.  He got a good tip.

Tuktuks that try to take me to fkng gem shops get zip.  I walk away and find another one.

Go with the heart.  Invest a little in a future investment or give to someone that just needs a little extra.  Asia is amazing in that respect.  A lot of them remember again and again, even months later!

Good to see I am within the line.

My rule of thumb is:

Taxi: never!!!!, unless the meter says e.g. 37, I let him have 40 etc.

Restaurants: "standard" 20 B, fancy place by my gut feeling, note, some places has included the service charge anywhere from 10-15%.

Beer Bars: 20-50 depending on service and how drunk I am at the time I leave....

Go go: If the girl has been nice and polite and not too pushy while having giving her lady drinks; 50-100 B.

ST, well, that all depends..........

hello all

I over tipped last trip my 1st just cause I was so used to it in the USA I didn't think about it. However in reading this thread I will try a little harder not to over tip. WHY drive the prices up to  fast makeing thailand just like every where else that soon they will be expecting it with sneers and dirty looks if you don't. I get plenty of this here in the US I sure don't need it there on my escapes from reality tours

In using this logic, let me pose a question ... if the ride from LaGuardia Airport to Manhattan is roughly the same distance/time as the ride from Don Muang to BKK, the meter in NY reads US$35, the meter in BKK reads 200B (about $4.50), what should you pay in BKK? ĘShould you double it (and give him 400B) and give him a 100% tip, as you are doing with every BG (assuming an average LT price of 2000B)?

There's a big difference between the two cases. In one case you have a fixed price on a meter, in the other case the expected price has a huge variance.

I'm sure for tglover it is much simpler to overpay than figure out what the "correct" price is and risk either greatly disappointing the girl or ruining the experience by haggling over a few dollars.

Prices at home are relevant to some of us, not as an indication of what we should pay, but how much a particular good or service is worth to us (and therefore how soft we are on the price).

People are quite within their moral and ethical rights to haggle LT down to 1000B or even lower if they want. But I simultaneously reserve the right to pay 5000B ST if I want to.

And while I have given 100% tip to taxi drivers on many occasions in Thailand (Las Vegas too, actually), I certainly don't have a problem with those who don't tip at all.

In both cases, you have a fixed price on the meter ... my example compared the price of the taxi in NY to the price of the taxi in BKK, relating it to the fact that he said he doesn't mind overpaying for a BG because the same service would cost $500 in the US.

I have to admit that I usually tip very little, except in cases of very good service. Tipping just isn't a big thing in OZ and I look at it more of a reward of providing good service.
In bars, etc, I usually just leave some small change 10-20B, except if they break down the last 70B or so into all coins (expecting me to leave it all). In those cases I don't leave a tip at all. I did get asked one time, after going back to a bar where this was done previosly, why "you no leave tip?". I told the BG straight out that normally I do leave a small tip, but since they got greedy and had broken down a larger amount into coins expecting a bit tip, they weren't going to get anything. Next time I paid a bill there, the notes/coins ratio was right and I did leave a small tip.

They do learn if you tell them.

Hi all,
Well, about the taxi driver...when I went to poseidon on ratchada, the meter was 51 baht and I gave the driver 200 baht.  He seems like an older man and there was traffic at the time.  I guess traffic is normal though but I figured he had to drive back in it.
I guess NYC is one of the most expensive place to live.  A few dollars to make someone happy is not much to me.  It's not like I'm trying to help a million people out but only a few people that threat me nice.  If I really wanted to...I could have free sex in thailand very easily.  In fact, I get offered at the time but prefer to pick and choose at MPs and GoGo bars.
I really don't mind that others don't tip or tip less because I know that each person or society is different.  When I'm going out, I like the girls to feel relax and not have to worry about money for food etc.
When I checked out grace coffee to see what it was like, I sat alone but a girl and her friend asked if they can sit with me because it was full.  I said sure..well there as a guy from australia who came over to sit with one of the girl from my table.  My girl said that she is hungry and wants to go eat.  He told her that they sell food here but she said she didn't have enough money.  He gave her 200 baht to eat.  I don't know about her but I was touched by his kindness.  In asia, what he did was wrong because she was sitting with me (making me look cheap) but I didn't mind because he was only thinking of being a nice guy.
