If you're making that much now, just live the same lifestyle you're used to. You should have enough money left over for alimony, and savings.

Abrak, yeah FB told me about that one.

Doctine, you need to find a new employer. Any company that is opening so many new offices as you state and pays you that amount, sucks big time. What do you do, what does the company do, sweat shop setups, live by example ?? Do you work for Nike ?

Sun-Thurs, don't stay out too late, and get your BG out in time for work...

Fri & Sat, go for it, but don't try to continue on Sunday evening.

must have limits, and trust me, it's difficult, til you've been here long enough to adjust...

Well said LY... One really has to pace onesself here or the quality of work will go down a lot. It's a bit different for those folks that are on a year's contract as they try to cram as much as they can into the time they have.

But making a policy of being home by midnight during the week is a good idea. And alcohol can make a big difference in terms of how alert one feels the next day. A big night out can mean the next day is written off- struggling to get through just to go home and crash.

Of course having friends from the forum visiting midweek doesn't help much... you know who you are!!!!

I thought I'd resurrect and update this thread because LY's advice was directed towards me.

I've now been here 4 months and the advice to be disciplined as a newbie is spot-on. Of course this country is cheap, and of course it's paradise for us guys, but it can be misleading. It's cheapness can, in effect, turn out to be expensive. You end up buying more than you need, eating out all the time because it's too hot to go to the supermarket to buy food to cook. Going to get a good suit made? Why not order three? Need a DVD for tonight? Damn it, I'll buy 5 cos they are so cheap.

My first few months have been relatively expensive, for two key reasons. The first is set-up costs. Whether you are surviving on 450k or a month or 5% of that, you can't avoid these costs... the costs of buying things you left behind, the costs of ignorance. The second is the cost of generosity... I found that my early months were marked by a desire to be 'jai dee'..... I over-tipped everywhere. 60baht cab ride? I gave a hundred. 70 beer? I paid a hundred. The girls in my 'local' soi 13 bar look bored? I'd bar fine them so they could go and have fun somewhere - I wouldnt even go with them. After a while, of course, the requests get more blatant and you learn to wise up.

Costs have settled down now and, in the interests of advising fellow expat newbies, I thought it would be useful to go through my consolidated monthly expenses. It's an amount I'm happy with and gives me the kind of life, fun and comfort that I could not aspire to in the west. Next year, I'll be buying property outright so a major chunk of that ongoing expense will disappear immediately.

Rent (Suk 11, brand new, 200 sqm) 58,000
GF allowance 20,000
maid 4000
power / air etc 4000
UBC 1500
water 1500
groceries etc 6000
eating out 15,000
entertainment 20,000
books / dvds 2000
gifts etc 6000
transport / taxis 6000
internet 400
misc (inc clothes / travel etc) 20,000

Total c 165,000

I know I could easily 'live' for a quarter or a third of this amount and still be relatively comfortable, but I chose not to. That might be the future; right now I'm here to enjoy myself. This amount gives me a quality of life I could never have had before.

Hope that helps other newbies.

Yes Thailand is cheap. But there is also a lot to spend your money on. I was there 9 years and never saved a penny. What with GF's, BF's, partying in CM2, QBar, Ratchada etc. I spent every penny I earned. And I earned a hell of a lot. Was it worth it? At the time yes. Now I look back I was an idiot.
Well now it looks like I am going to be permanently in HK/China/UK with occasional weekend visits to BKK. Difference is there is bugger all to spend my cash on in those places so I am much better off. And when I come to BKK I can have a good time and then leave.
IMHO those guys who live/work in US/Europe and come to BKK as frequently as they can/want have got it right.

Scobie, agree about Thailand been cheap but because of this works out expensive.

However Rent + GF per month = 78000 or £1100 or $2000!!

I know you say its your choice but even on a very good salary I would find a good apartment for maybe bht 30k a month and then find a good girl who has a job and doesn't need me to support her same as I would do here in UK but I would cover expenses when we go out etc.

Giving a GF 20000 bht per month seems like renting also to me and I woud rather spend that money on pay as you go girls. What would happen if you stopped giving her money? would she leave you? and then is that why she is with you?

savings = $1250 a month. Even if you are well off, why throw away that kind of money?
