Why do my costs treble after 75? Is this an estimate based on just medical charges?
Just from personal experience. As you get older and lose mobility, you'll find that things you used to enjoy simply isn't possible.

Where in the past you might take the Skytrain, at 75 you'll probably end up in a cab or a chauffered car to get around. You probably need to be in a building which doesn't require you climb stairs, and will probably need a serviced-apartment or a housekeeper.

Toss in inflation, and you'll find that even without medical expenses your needs will escalate quite a bit.

If you are one of those people who remain physically vigorous at the age of 75, then you can disregard all of the above. But the odds of that are pretty low.

If it gets that bad... 75 was a good innings, toss 50 5mg valium to the back of the neck and swallow.

It was a good life....

AKs are for terrorists, I am more the 'freedom fighter' kind of guy...

Anyway by the time I am 75 they will have Phase Plasma rifles... I could kill and quarterize the wound at the same time...

Obsessions just needs a couple of hand grennades...

I guess if you do make it to 75 you save a little bit on not bar fining so often ?
Yes Mal - Viet tour one day sounds good - the guy I chatted to a bit in Nah trang [owner Jacks bar] had been there a long time ; told me the go was the Girls in hair salons - as I say, pity at the time I didnt have more time to follow up ;
Cambodia an option also - I know the lingo a bit, and my way round OK, especially in some of the places outside Phnom Phen, but VERY sleazy, and your never 100% sure of the locals - plus many of the decent P4Ps are actually Vietnamese boat people -
Guess we stick with LOS -

Comparable prices (in US$) : We are talking top ends here, so for "cheap charlie" fare, pls consult LY.

1. top end real estate : HK - $2000/ft. SF-$1000/ft, BKK-$250/ft.
2. power lunches : HK-$100/person, SF-$40/person. BKK-$10/person
3. romantic dinners (without wine) : HK-$200/person, SF-$100/person. BKK-$25 (per person)

Most importantly ;

Pussies : ( we are also talking about 9's and 10's here, below 8's need not apply)

1. FL's (LT) : HK-$2000/night, SF-$3,000/night, BKK-$125/night
2. mia noi : HK-$$$$$$$$$, SF-$$$$$$$$$ ( if you ask, you can't afford it) BKK-$5,000 tops

In conclusion: to maintain the same lifestyle in BKK, you have to make about 15-20% of your current farang income. So if you make $100,000/month, you would need $20,000/month. If you make $4,000/month, you would probably only need 1,000/month to make you happy in BKK. Take what you make now in farangland, then save up 20% of that, then retire to BKK. You will be smiling from ear to ear and cum every 5 seconds till eternity !! What a country !!

Disclaimer : the above is totally un-scientific. All $$ and prices and ideas all just came to me in a 5 minutes span. No serious thoughts or studies were given to make such foolish above statements. So don't bother firing back.......cos I got thick thick armor-my skin

I would need at least $10,000 USD/month I think. I am cheap but I am a little crazy too. Even at those wages I don't think I would really feel flush.

I like not worrying about things. I also like feeling free in LOS. I want to be able to spend some time in the US every year too. I would want to keep my home in the San Francisco Bay area. I would keep it because a) it appreciates nicely. b) once you get off that pony it is very hard to get back on.

Basher, I really like and respect your investment ideas. I like real estate but I work in high tech. I don't have a 401K at the moment. I only have stock and real estate my rentals won't support me yet.

I have done rentals my whole life. I lost everything in my divorce in the late nineties and it was only after I had an epiphany in Phuket that I got started again. Anyway now I am married to a Thai and am trying to get it together in LOS in the rental are. Are you planning in renting to farangs or Thais?

There are a couple of computer based plays that are working well in China at this time that I think I can port to LOS in the near future but that will take a little more work than rental property and shop rentals.

Anyway I am really into living on a shoestring anywhere. I can and have done that but thinking about every nickel can kill a person and I work pretty damn hard. I am hoping things will keep improving financially for me. Being poor sucked bad...no need to repeat that.

I think my expenses wont treble from when I'm 60 to 75. 'Cause my idea of retirement is just that, "retire" to the countryside. I would certainly have a nice bungalow and small alotment, p'raps even a modest swimming pool with some gentle steps with a gard rail, leading from the lawn.

I'll have one of them latest "converged" contraptions that play the music I like, the movies I like, the TV (or whateverit's called by then) will also be converged with the telephone, computer, fridge, wireless etc., all nailed together into something that no doubt appears (virtually) on the wall in 3D, whenever I think about it!

Girl on-hand (so to speak) to wheel me out onto the verandah of a mornin' to have my regular blow job etc. Where I'd like my biggest decision of the day to be whether I play golf, feed the cat or should I saunter down to the local hostelry for a quick sherbet and read my copy of Readers Digest.

No need for taxis and there aint no skytrain in the countryside (I'll have a car but rarely need to drive it) and with me bein' such a low stressed creature of the non smokin', vegertarian variety with parents and grandparents that lived into their late 80s n' 90s with not a hint of any congenital diseases (well, a bit of heart trouble here n' there, actually) I reckon my biggest risk for illness is bein' bumped off by the wife's long-lost husband/brother/boyfriend etc. But as I wont have too many material possesions (apart from the converged thingy) then why would he bother.

Cheerio
PS: My resting heart rate is 53 and I've got good strong teeth as well by the way.

How much income from investment assets would be enough for you to give it all up and come to live in LOS?

I could live well in Bangkok on 100,000BHT/month. To make the move I'd want more, 250,000BHT/month or $1 million USD in savings. I'm single. I'd live in Bangkok. I'd retire at least for a while.

I am nearing 75 and my biggest jump in expenses has been keeping rubber tips on the legs of my walker.
