Since this thread has been quite.....
Today was at Bumrungrad and when it's time to pay they always ask if I want to pay in Baht or Dollars. This trip my main card is Chase traveler card with no foreign transaction fees and they send me a txt each time a transaction hits the card so I know when it's used
The bill from BH was 4K something or, in dollars they would charge 121.69. I said charge in Baht. Seconds later I get a text from chase saying my card was charged 117.16.
Even if only 5 dollars, I am surprised it was so much better exchange rate than what BH provided. I know I'll be paying in baht and letting my banks back home convert.

You always get ripped off on the exchange rate if you pay in dollars instead of baht, anywhere. It is the same if you change money at your hotel rather than at a bank exchange booth, you get ripped off.
Something most don't know about is the added fee at bank ATMs. Not only is there the bt180-bt200 fee, but they also take an extra bt1.20 per dollar. Right now the bank exchange rate is bt34.93 to the dollar, but out of an ATM it is bt33.73, plus the bt180-bt200 fee. Most people don't know about this extra charge.
Right now the best rates are on $100 bills, or $500 size TCs.

Makes sense... In the old days, when many cards charged outrageous "foreign transaction fees" plus a wide ranging exchange rate, it seems to be a hit or miss what was better.... having seen this in real time, and no foreign transaction fees... I now know better.

I was in Chicago the other day and the forex in the airport advertised thai baht at 34.25 for 100s... Landed here and best I can find is low to mid 32 at super rich, vasu, etc. I was really quite surprised to see that large of a difference and will start to reconsider where I load up

That's quite impossible that they were buying dollars and converting them to baht at that rate...the baht hasn't been over 34 against the dollar for a couple months now. You were probably seeing their rate for BUYING baht, not buying dollars, which would put the rate ridiculously in their favor (which is, of course, what currency exchanges always do).

That is what I thought as well...but I went to the counter, inquired and the woman at the counter confirmed. I have no freaking clue how or why as I've watch the dollar weaken steadily over the past year....makes no sense to me
I'll be thru Chicago again next month and will check again
