GS... think the majority of farang teachers in LOS love to be getting 40k a month ! I used to get 20k for many years, when Hotel marketing manager ! - mind you, in those days a 'purple' [500bt] was the going rate, and a bottle of Sangthip was 50 bt ! - 10-12 yrs ago. Could still survive OK on 40k, or perhaps even 20k, if you had to, but it would be Bus's/Beer/and freebies with a 3000bt apartment with no aircon down on soi 101.

I think 40k a month in Bkk is ok. It will certainly not be splendour but neither will it be poverty. I am currently on an extended vacation here and could live comfortably on 40k. I don't but that's due to my indiscipline. My 1BR apartment is 9k a month all in, the restaurant downstairs does good room service meals for 50-70Bt. Laundry is 10bt a shirt.I am far enough away from the action not to be tempted every night but close enough to go out whenever. I am no cheapskate but I don't throw baht at TG's..perhaps this is where the savings come from. I think a single man can live (not survive) in BKK comfortably for 50kBt per month + 20k a month insurance allowance for health etc.

I think my expenses wont treble from when I'm 60 to 75. 'Cause my idea of retirement is just that, "retire" to the countryside. I would certainly have a nice bungalow and small alotment, p'raps even a modest swimming pool with some gentle steps with a gard rail, leading from the lawn. ... Cheerio PS: My resting heart rate is 53 and I've got good strong teeth as well by the way.
That's the key, isn't it? Dialing back your expectations and lifestyle. When I say "triple your expenses", it's assuming that the 75 year old will continue to live in BKK, hit the bars and MP's, etc.... I knew a guy who at the age of 38 had a resting heart rate so low that nurses unfamiliar with him were worried he was having a heart-attack. He was just an extremely serious tri-athlete. He developed arthritis and had to start using a walker by his 60's. Then there's the guys who were slightly overweight all their lives who maintain that same general slouching posture all the way through till their 70's without any major long-term issues. Hard to predict, and better safe than sorry. You'd rather be the guy leaving family $$ you didn't expect to have left than the poor old guy who's broke...

I thought that we were prolly in agreement but sayin' it differantly. The main thing I reckon is to get all the big stuff outa the way. For somebody like me that would mean movin' to the countryside (in Laos or LOS), buy a house or condo and furnish it, get a trustworthy (?) BG or two moved in, buy a pickup, mountain bike and scooter, golf membership etc. Then I will be spendin' most of the rest of my natural' just scratchin' my arse, lookin' at the bike and playin' with my Zaurus SL600l (I hope Amazon deliver by then!). So that's me sorted with SR20k/month plus a government pension (if I'm eligeable). Cheerio PS: I'll also keep a handful of DF118 handy just incase I get too depressed with the thought of carryin' on or returnin' to work!

of course the question is, when your old, decrepit, and its a matter of 'TRY WEAKLY' rather than TRI WeekLY, do you really WANT to be in LOS ? I think nothing more pitiful than seeing someone who obviously is well past it, and basically a laughing stock, still struggling to relive HIS glory years of a decade or two ago in LOS !

Well, you could be the old guy struggling along with a bargirl on his arm, and a cook/maid at home in LOS, with younger travelers and expats laughing at your antics. Or you can be in the west, probably in a nursing home shuffling around with other old people, surly nurses that clean the room once a week if you're lucky. You'll eat tasteless fattening food and associate with other elderly people while the staff laugh at your antics (when they're not angry or frustrated). Which is better?
