The bank was : the bank of Ayudhya, Patong branch, took all of 10 min, she provided her I.D. card and I produced my passport. They gave me the passbook, ATM card and pin number and said there is your bank account I asked the GF did she whant the pin number and the account number ? she said no as she has her own account in the bank of Bangkok and why did she need mine ? smiles all round. Beretta. btw when making a deposit I still have to put her name and mine on the deposit form.

Thought I would update this post a bit. Earlier this week, was last day in bkk and wanted to see if I could open an account. On the telephone (with a thai calling), SCB and K-bank said would need a work permit (in addition to passport). Thought I would try my luck at some branches and hit SCB at Carrefore on Rama 4, same story. Bangkok Bank there indicated that might be able to do it, but would have to go to main office. Didn't have time to get there, so can't report back on that, but yes appears a bit hit or miss.

SCB is quite strict. When I lost my ATM card from an account I had for years, I had to open a new account. They asked me to show a WP... but opened it any way because it actually was a replacement of an old account.

just opened an account with kasikorn bank located next to the landmark hotel. they were very friendly and - believe it or not - efficient! it took less than 30 minutes to open the account, get an atm machine and cyber banking. they needed my passport, retirement visa and a legal bangkok address. i deposited USD $ and received a decent exchange rate. the atm card and the cyber account worked first time. they charged 300 baht for the atm card, so it wasn't totally free. according to my landlord, each bank and bank branch has its own policy and these change frequently, so the "opennng a bank account in bangkok" process might prove to be a hit or miss proposition............

Kasikorn Update: I used my new Kasikorn cyber banking function last nite to setup and transfer funds from my Kasikorn account to my landlord's account at Siam Commercial bank. Setting-up a transfer link to my landlords account and transferring funds took less than 5 minutes. what I especially liked about the process is its security function. Both when I setup the payee account and then when I transferred funds, kasikorn sent me a text message with the transaction number and a one-time 5 digit pass-code. Entering the pass-code into the cyber banking form allowed me to complete the transaction. Not too bad for Bangkok............

Lucky you, these days, you won't be able to open an account at Bangkok Bank without a work permit.
