I assume that you mean the US dollar exchange rate sucks. It does not hurt LOS locals in the short term, but it could theoretically reduce exports to the US, and possibly cost jobs in Thailand. It could also have a negative effect on US tourism in Thailand. However, Thailand exports goods to many other countries besides the US and has tourists from many countries, so I would not worry about it too much. One benefit to locals is that US made goods are less expensive for them to purchase.

Is that a US$ Vs Thai BHT at 35.5 that I see Don't worry toooooo much guys,, my prediction ( 6 months ago ) of a 35-35.5 US exchange was correct but I can't see it getting any worse any time soon. Actually the Baht is starting to look a little over priced especially for a service/tourism / manufacturing based economy, so expect a transition back toward 37-37.5 over the next 3-6 months. The AUD looks good for only the short term,,, maybe crack US.80 but will not be allowed to stay at that price for commodity sale reasons. Overall its very nice to have some money IN the country you like to visit often, it negates some of the currency fluctuations,, so if you have EURO now is a good time to put a bit into the Thai share market and get returns in BAHT. YMMV. Mel

Yep. And those Boeing jets keep rolling off the assembly line headed to foreign nations, while Airbus is in deep trouble.

Talk about apples and oranges what a spin. Boeing is selling jets because they can deliver. The airbus may be cheaper, but the European Misunion can't get their act together and customers are left with a lot of hot air and no plane.

US$ Vs THB 35.2. This must be really starting to hurt some of the retired expats on pensions. The Japanese Yen is at a 9 year low against the AUD so their cheap trips to Thailand are getting more expensive also. In 12 months the US$ has dropped from 41.2 BAHT to 35.2 near 15%, and with hotel prices rising some 30% real costs for a US tourist have effectively risen some 50%. This must start to have an effect on tourism shortly. Its a similiar story with the Yen. These monetary units have stayed almost steady against the Cambodian real and have actually gone up against the Vietnamese Dong, perhaps one day soon we will see far fewer Taxi's zooming around Sukhumvit and perhaps the country can return to its normal NON TIPPING rules Mel.

Mel: I think blaming the Yanks for the "taxis running up and down Sukhumvit" and the "tipping" expected by Thais is a little bit of a stretch. Perhaps you might want to rethink your position on this?

The exchange rate is really hurting travel biz...as Mel pointed, the USD has lost 16% in less than 12 months and since local agencies sell in USD but pay in THB, things are not going well at all for the avarage mark up on cost is 10/15%, not even enough to cover the loss of the exchange rate...... And so they have to revise the rates/quotations, a move that of course it ain't welcomed by the oversea clients and it's hurting also the reputation of the local agencies....

expat I definately do NOT blame the Yanks for the Taxi's,, but I do think they are largely responsible for the tipping expectations, not to mentions words such as Shrimp and Ketchup,,LOL. I think soon commodities etc will be priced in Euro rather than $US, there was some talk of this a year or so ago. I wasn't being scarcastic saying I felt sorry for the retired US expats living in BKK, I remember how much LESS I enjoyed a trip when the AUD was 20.2 BAHT,, it really made things expensive. MG
