Ok, just out of curiosity, how (and where) do you go to get a job in LOS (BKK preferred). Ideally I'd like to get something in IT, but I'm open-minded. Looked at some sites, but no luck so far.

Don't mean to discourage you but if there were a simple answer to your question or a surefire way to do it, I bet there would be a lot more falangs living in Thailand.
Guess how many guys go home and start wondering the same thing you are now...

Indeed a question asked very often. Mr. Joe is correct by saying that if there were jobs easily available there would be a lot of farangs living here.
Basically the Thai government is not to keen on having too many of us farangs over here. Why, well one reason is that they don't like us competing with the locals for jobs.
I very often put it like this: If you are very good in a specialised field, a field where the locals are not too good at, then you have an opertunity to set up some business.
I have no specific knowledge about the IT sector here in Thailand, but I am sure that a lot of foreigners are trying very hard to get jobs there. This means that you are not only competing for a job with the locals but with foreigners as well. Unless you are a "rock" in this particular field, it might be better to look at other opertunities.

And as Thailand develops and has less need for foreign experts, it will only get tougher. Sure there will probably always be some opportunities for a limited number of Falangs but...
The key word is "limited".

Jobwise... some falangs that I know (who make a modest but acceptable living.
-explosives/demolition consultant (sometimes spikes up to 150-200k a month if there is much work) 60-250k (contract work)
-shooting (.22 LR) coach 60k/month plus housing.
You have to be able to market your expertise or uniqueness. Make sure it's not something that Thais are willing to do undercut your profit margin on.

or stock broker marketing for international clients 150-200K a month.
sales person for US or european markets 100-200K plus comission.
pilot 200K
ceo of a thai port 400K etc etc.

why not ask some of the working farangs on this board like BK, pinga, phantom V, farang bha, butznutz etc. how they got a job and how much they are rewarded!
may be they might give you an answer!

been here now for 4 years and can say that at first it was a living hell getting a job. Forget job agencies and jobsdb. The only way you can get a decend job here in LOS is by proper networking. Most larger companies have farang Management. But if you go through the papers and Internet adds, you're resume will end up on a Thai Human Resourses officer, and when that happens you ain't got no chance in hell.
I am speaking harshly here, because it is true. I myself am in IT to, so I know the field, and right now it is swamped and to every one job adverdized there are 1000's of applicants.
Your best bet if you are still overseas is to look for jobs locally that will send you to LOS.
But if you just want to stay in LOS for a few months and work a bit you can work as an IT teacher (payes much better then English Teacher). If you are interested send me a PM and I'll forward some contacts to you.

I wish I could be working in LOS...! I asked my company if there is a chance, but they offered me to work in Saudi instead. God knows why...! Another option would be to work as a diving instructor again, but the share offered in LOS is quite lousy compared to the one in the Phils. and Indonesia.
