Thai baht notes come in 10, 20, 50 100, 500 and 1000B denominations. The largest denomination is 1000 B which is roughly about US$ 23.

Just as you exit the customs, you will see the money exchange banks out there. If you take the taxi you will pay according to the meter, plus 50B and the toll rate if you go by the toll way which is very convenient. The taxi fare is about 300B (in most cases).
If you are travelling light, you could alternatively take the airport bus, which can drop you just opposite Majestic Suites at the bus stop between Soi 3 and Soi 5 (outside Tony Roma's).

There are also exchange booths inside the imigration areas before customs in case you need Thai currency to pay for your visa if you are getting visa on arrival.
Also remember the private car rental counters that are located inside the terminal building after customs will try to get you, claiming to be taxi services. Avoid them. They cost twice as much. Turn left when you come out of the customs hall and take the right exit. Turn right again for the metered taxi booth.
