Hi: Currently the baht - Dollar exchange rate is about 44.5 I heard from a friend that there are places where he can take me where I can get a higher rate for my dollar. How much higher can it be (using the 44.5b as a model)? Is it worth it to go out of the way or better use of time to go to a regular bank and be on the way to have some fun? I am looking to exchange about $500 worth

How much could you possibly get anyway? Even if you could get say 45, how much extra are you getting? 45 - 44.5 x 500 = 250 B. Is it worth all that trouble? If you were changing thousands of dollars then maybe it would make a difference.

I think what "newbie" meant is how he can get a rate close to the 44.5 BAHT x Dollar, not above. ÝI recommend do the following:
1) Get US TRAVELLERS CHECKS at $100.00 and higher denominations. Ý
2) Cash them in Bangkok (as you see fit) at their reputable banks like BANGKOK BANK and others. ÝYou will get very near to the exact 44.5 rate (or whatever the rate is). ÝThe higher the denominations, the closer the rate.
3) Avoid the following: ÝALL US BANKS IN THE USA, All Bureau de Change's at the airports of the USA, CANADA, BRITAIN (and most of Europe), and HONG KONG. ÝThey will rip you off. ÝAll of them! The exchange areas at Don Muang Airport in Bangkok is *OKAY*! They are good. Ditto for Tokyo for getting YEN only!!
4) Avoid HOTELS! ÝCrowne Plaza Bangkok will charge 40.7 BAHT when it is 44.5 BAHT. ÝThe convenience of it, however, is the hotels are opened 24/7. ÝSo if you get "Lucky" and it becomes "Unlucky", they will be able to bail you out. Ý ÝTrust me, that advice is more fluent than it looks! ÝHa ha ha!
Some US banks will offer free traveller's checks if you have like a billion accounts with them, so look into that. ÝYou certainly don't want to get travellers checks and then get an exchange rate rip off from your own kind.
US BANKS **RIP OFF** AMERICANS and any foreigner that uses their service. ÝWhat happens is the following:
- The US Teller knows NOTHING about anything that happens outside the US border, therefore they will know NOTHING about the currency you ask for. Ý"Mam, may I have THAI BAHT for a $1000.00??" ÝShe/He will say "Where's that country??"
in an egotistical attitude.
- The Bank higher ups that do know what is outside the US purposely seperate the buy/sell rate in a greater ratio that will cost you $100.00 per $1000.00 just to exchange the cash, the teller goes by the computer exchange value and you get ripped off. ÝGuess who gets the cash??
So don't use them.
Tokyo has excellent exchange rates for their yen.....but not the other way for dollars. ÝSo I recommend to keep the yen. It has more value.
If "newbie" meant something different, I stand corrected.

Oh yeah, avoid hotels if possible.
There is one other way to get money 24/7. ATM machines. If your ATM card has the PLUS or Cirrus system, you can use it with the local machines here. If one ATM doesn't work, try another. There are lots of ATM machines here in Bangkok.

Just so you guys know the baht is not 44.5 but 40.5, hey that's a 10% difference! That could make a difference in how many girls we can afford!

and you may not get 40 to the US$ anymore.. There is always a bit of a fee for the moneychanger (hasn't changed since Biblical times) ..
Use ATM's for the best rate.. $100 denominations for US$'s .. at least that for Euro's .. I would think the EU$500 would be a good size to carry?? YOu only need one a day
