Generally I am a fair tipper who belives that tipping is just purely for the service. ÝUsually in Thailand, I play it by the ears or simply follow my yankee tipping habit which is 10-15% of the total bill. But often I have a feeling I've over tipped since I am paying on top of an over inflated tourist price. How do you generally tip? ÝAnd what do Thais expect in term of tipping? It doesn't have to be only for P4P. ÝHow about for things like: - taxi - restaurant - hotel bellboy - hotel maid - bartender - tour guide - the gopher kid

I've learned from a few thai people that 20 baht is always a good tip ... maybe a bit more if you have a big meal in a restaurant ... For tipping girls for services it's a different story though ...

I always leave the change for the bar, they seem to bring a few 10 baht coins instead of a 20 baht paper note in anticipation of this. I leave more at restaurants, sometimes 10-15%, although this is over tipping. The travel books suggest rounding up to the nearest 20 baht. I also give 10-20% for taxi.

I can vouch for my esteemed traveling companion, and share his sentiments. This happy poster loves to spread the baht to those who serve. Like most stupid Farangs I give the "Farang discount" which is usually twice as much than the usual tip. Locals seem to smile that way. Taxi- dependent upon service, driver knowledge, attitude, etc. Bar- 20-40 baht, like T-A. Hotel Doorman- 20-100 if I like him, and he looks out for me. Hotel Maid- 40-100 baht per day, mostly depending on how bad I trashed the room the night before.

Thin White Duke: First of all, welcome back. Secondly, I also tip well for good service. So, my range is around what you have posted. I might tip the maid more if the room is a complete mess though and if the service at a restaurant is excellent, I always tip 20% of the total bill. Yes, this might be over-tipping compared to asian standards, but I believe that they work hard and thus should be compensated for that. And what I meant by asians is that in Asia, many people don't tip or if they do they tip under or around 5%. I think that that is pathetic is the service was excellent, but go figure!! ha ha ha!!

The longer I've stayed here, the less I tip. Only in those cases where I feel the service is absolutely great (where it be bargirls, taxi drivers, restaurants) I leave a generous tip (at least 10 or 20 baht). But never a percentage ..... That's why I am known as 'Mr. Prayat' (Mr. Save) all around the bar areas of our beloved little city.

The girls get real shitty if you leave too big a tip like more than 10 baht to service people but strangely enough they never complain if you sling an extra 500 or 1000 their way.

I usually overtip... In bars, restaurants, taxis and hotels like Baht 20. If I take a taxi to Pattaya, to dancers if I like them a lot and to the papasan in an MP Baht 100. To MP girls, naw this is up to me, LOL. But I never tip BGs after ST or LT... Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý

In a bar for a round of two beers I'll tip 20 baht unless more than 20 baht comes back in coins, then I tip 10.
