Hi,buying a condo in a few weeks. Exchange rates make a heleva difference. I got 3 choices as I see it.
: 1 bank to bank transfer.
2 Take the lot in tc's........Open my Thai account with them.
3 Take cash.

I phoned my bank.....they told me transfer rate 72 bt to the GBP, but I got no way of comparing to the tc or cash rate in LOS on the same day.

Thanks.

(Promise the world.........and give them an atlas)

1 - Consider the expenses of both options 1 and 2

(bank fees on both sides)

2 - Cash will cost you more to buy if you buy THB in England (probably difficult to find). Or the exchange rate will be lower if you change your GBP into THB in Thailand.
But no fees to buy or sell.

Atlas,

IMHO, the best thing to do is to open a Thai Bank Account and send a fax to your bank in order to transfer the money (for "big" amounts of money).

Usually, even with the bank transfer fees, the exchange rate is better than with Travellers Cheques or cash.

You can check the rates in the Business section of the Bangkok Post (for example) and at: http://www.oanda.com (for example).

Hope this helps...

PS: Don't ask your UK bank to transfer amounts in Baht to your thai bank account! You would better have to transfer pounds, and your bank in Thailand will automatically convert that amount in Baht with a better exchange rate.

Mr Alan
I don't know about the UK, but in the US it is illegal to take more than $10,000 cash out of the country without reporting it. I would also check Thai law about bringing cash into the country.

But even if it is legal, bringing cash sounds like the stupidest idea I have ever heard of.

atlas,

if r u intending to register the condo in your farang name, u better check the guidelines... think u need a document from the onshore bank to prove that the money was remitted in from offshore..

check with your property agent..

or alternatively u can transfer to my account for a fee of 10%.. 555

Who said, 'Saeng's a great s**g?'

Was it. A. Dark night,B.Eden Papa,or C Chateux Jade?

..........Yep, having lurked in the background for over 3 years, I reckon I could hold my own on 'Mastermind' when it comes to the fruitier threads on this board. However I was relieved to see I hadn't, (so far) been slammed for asking what I feared may have been a dumb question on the money pages, which I rarely get round to. Just quite helpful comments.

A baht per GBP saved or lost equates to 10 or 12 st's or 3 or 4 trips to Eden hence my sudden serious interest in exchange rate matters..........I have still to decide my best option, but when I do I'll write up the 'Condo buying Experience' in a field report that other's may find useful and 'jazz it' with how far my savings took me.......in 'other' activities.

Thanks for your comments.
Atlas.

I've just bought one and you have to show that you have transferred the money in from overseas.
So you will have to do it through a bank transfer and your bank will have to say in the text of the transfer why you are bringing the money.
I also had to state the address of the Condo I was buying on the transfer.

I suppose thereare ways of buying in cash but whether you will ever be the legal owner is doubtful, also if you wish to sell in a couple of years and take the money out of Thailand you will have a problem

My 2 cents...

Open a FCD, foreign currency deposit, account with your bank in Thailand and wire the funds in from overseas in the original currency. In Thailand you can convert to local currency for low costs and a good rate.

As for your monthly payments... Have you thought about internet banking? You should be able to schedule your monthly payments or make the monthly payment yourself. I have this facility myself with Bank of Asia, which I do not use anymore due to their stupidity.

Agree with your choice of Bangkok Bank, they are great for me since I have my business here. And without work permit. (I do not work, just own the busines..)

Tks Manuel
I am now using my overseas account to make the monthly payments to the receiving Bank in BKK. But if I ever sell and want to send the money back to UK BKK Bank say they cannot do the transfer.
