Hi. I am planning an 8 month trip to SEA. Stopping in Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia. To finance my trip, I will be using my debit amt MasterCard for withdrawing money. Recently, I though about “What will I do if I loose my atm card in SEA?” I am looking for some ideas how to prepare for this kind of emergency. Are there steps I can do in the U.S. before I leave to get access to some backup money? Should I take along a large sum of cash? Can my bank mail me a new atm card outside the U.S. (I will check). Also, I will not have any close relatives to wire me money. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks. Tom.

If you search this forum (Money Matters) for the word "ATM" or the word "emergency", you will find many thoughts by people about your questions. Good luck.

Bring travelers checks. If you loose them, you can get a refund in where ever you are. Save the receipt in a separate location from your money, and record the information on an email that you send to yourself that can be accessed anywhere using the internet. In LOS, the exchange rate on TC's is actually better than cash (although a small fee is charged to make it about the same as cash). If you have an AMX card, you can get them without a purchase fee. My bank also gives me fee-free TC's (but not all do).

Have your bank issue you debit card only without the Master card side. If your card is cloned they can drain your account using the credit card side without the pin #. Get a new card from your bank. See if they will issue you a back up card. Get a pre paid ATM card. Don't carry your card at night. I get money during the day and leave my card locked back at the hotel. TC are good. I like having two or three ways to get money if I need it.

You should have 2 cards, each from a different bank. One card with you, one card in the safe in the room. Also have just enough money for the trip cash needs in one of the accounts to limit risk. Do this by transferring funds from the checking acct to savings. Carry the card with you in front pocket or better yet a security pouch in front under your pants to eliminate the pickpocket risk. Thieves can get Pin numbers, but they will be limited to your daily limit. If you can check your acct balances over the net, you can limit your risk there too.

You should be able to get a second atm card for that account. The card will have a different number as well as a different pin. Traveller's cheques, credit cards...mix it up. Western union wire transfers for an emergency.

Get travellers checks. They are free if you have AAA. You get better exchange rates than cash at most locations but you get hit with a stamp fee per check so it's best to get the large denominations like $500 checks, anything smaller and you end up getting slightly less exchange rate than cash. I think they charge something like 30 baht for stamp fee per check. If you lose them, they can easily be replaced.

Use ATM most of the time, but carry enough traveler's cheque on you to get through a few days, if needed. Unlike credit cards and ATM's, most thieves don't bother trying to steal your TC's.

I always bring some cash with me, as well as 2 ATM cards from two different banks (one stays in the hotel safe, one in my wallet). It is a good idea to inform your banks, as well as the credit card companies that you will be away as some financial institutions can block your account if they flag activity from a foreign country (without prior notice from the customer). Being set up for online banking is a good tool in general, particularly so if you're on an extended holiday (8 months - lucky guy!) as you can check your account whenever you want to see what's been going on in the account recently.

I use two wallets One holds my cards 2 ATM cards both form different banks that I can use online banking with. 2 Credit cards Some cash, a few TC sometimes. Staying for 8 months you will not be able to take enough TC for that length of time and feel comfortable carrying them from place to place. I only use one ATM card at a time and only carry that one card on me even during the day. At night I will often just carry enough cash for that nights fun. All the rest including my passport get locked in the safe. I do carry a photocopy of my passport with me. Back home I photocopy all documents including passport, cards, and plane ticket. I also Photocopy the back of the cards. The back has the number to call if the card is lost. I then leave a copy with a trusted friend. I take a copy with me but on that one make sure you black out the three digit code on the back of the credit cards - that is used for online purchases. I also black out the expiry date on that copy. If someone gets a hold of the photo copy they can't use the credit card numbers without the expiry date and the numbers on the back above your signature are needed for online purchase's. Both bank accounts are set up with two accounts, one savings (no access from the ATM) and a checking that does have ATM access. I move money from the savings to the checking as needed over the net. That way even if someone drugs you and gets your cards and Pin at least they can't drain your whole account. Yes people have gotten the pin out of others for their ATM card so better safe then sorry. I also take two phones with me but only use one. If one is stolen or (lost) I can use my back up phone. If there is no in room safe I store my extra wallet and passport in the safe at the front desk. I then lock up my suitcase using combination locks not key locks. If a girl gets up at night or drugs you she will not be able to find the keys. I then use a combo cable travel lock to lock my bag to an object in the room using the cable so no one can walk off with the bag. I can't think of much else that can be done to protect your stuff. Hope this helps bimmher
