Hi Forumers,

I am thinking of an early retirement off of Farangland.
But econonmy has not be nice to me. I have only 2 million Baht on a secret bank account that no one can take away from me. Not even my government or ex-wife.

How far will this get me upcountry e.g I want to buy/build a house, perhaps even get married to a poor farm girl, supporting her family ??? Will it be 1 year, 5 years, 15 years before I would be forced to leave LOS and start working in Farangland again ?

I appreciate your thoughts on this.

heiko,

2mB won't get you too far. Depends on whether you want to live in a stilt house or one made of concrete. In my TGF's village, farangs have built a number of houses, one of which cost 2.3mB. I could build something nice that I could retire to up there for about 1.mB, I think. Land prices, labor, and building materials continue to go up. So don't quit your day job yet.

are you planning to work??

if not, B2M will be gone in no time

you can build a place for about B500K that is livable, but you won't own the land..

if you get 5% interest on your money, you have about B75K per year left after buying the house.. that is B6K per month.. won't go far anywhere..

you don't want to use up your nest egg as if you get sick and it is gone?? would not want to be in that situation..

Personally, I would not retire to Thailand with anything less than some kind of pension (like SS in the USA) and then at least $200K for extras.. and that would still not be living large, but larger than if you lived in the USA or EU

Hi Balls,

Many thanks for your feedback !

It is kind of what I've feared. 2mB seems not even enough for a house ! But hey, this is a third world country, right. There must be some "mueang ban" where 2mB can last for a couple of years, no ? What area about do you live, no names, just give me an idea. I am not looking to live in the south for that matter. I feel south Thailand is more expensive than northern anyway, right ?

So let's say after building a place for B500K I have 1.5mB left. At a burning rate of 6kB a month (which is a LOT upcountry) I have enough money for 20 years. That does sound OK to me. Why would you say this is not sufficient ?
What part of the kingdom are you refering to or where can I get your mentioned 500kB price of house ? Your insight sounds very interesting.

not sufficient... because... you won't be a local... different needs... no group support... visa runs...

Got your point. There are lots of costs I did not factor in. So I just have to double my monthly rate to 10-12kB. That would still allow me 10 years of living in a village in my own small house. If that is my plan should I go for it ? I cannot wait until I ret really rich. It may never happen and I think I have to go to the kingdom now.

to be very honest, if you don't know where you can get a house for B500K, then you don't know enough about Thailand to retire there..

you could blow a big chunk of your money just looking around.... everything for farangs costs more..

living on B6K would be very frugal.. hell, most of us would not want to live on less than B100K, so figure out what 1/10th of that would do for you...

take a few vacations there and learn a bit about the country.. you could buy a place and find that you hate it and then what do you do..

also, places like Pataya have condos pretty cheap.. small, but you are near civilization.. not up country where if you get sick, they will put you out for the dogs to munch on

just MHO

but living on 10-12k a month, you'll be like a pauper

do you really think you can live Eesahn style ?

and you're going to get married to a poor farm girl ?

555, and on what basis would she want to live with you ?, if you live just like the rest of her family

think about this, no booze, no pussy, no aircon, no cable TV, and no one to turn to when you're down and out

a GF or wife might help you to save money and get around, but she's gonna need feeding, and her family is gonna want you to help them out too

I know a guy who retired on 2 mil, but he's also got a pension coming from SS every month, and he's already 70+, so he probably won't be having to stretch his finance for 20 more years
