When u use your Visa or Mastercard amx at many places in Thailand, the total comes out in U S DOLLARS u are getting ripped off for anywhere from1-3 %; Elample: charged $331.00 in us dollars at the emporium, exchange rate on the credit bill was 36.40baht to the dollar, I told them to change the bill to Thai baht.. called my credit card co. and asked them how much was the bill, answer: $323.00. The emporium, hospitals, central pull this stunt on you.. Request your bill in Thai baht not U S dollars..

David, I undertstand what you mean, but think I should post my experience with being a merchant. Each bank have their own exchange rate. Xe.com etc are just a guideline on exchange rates. When any credit card payment is processed in Thailand, the Thai Baht will be firstly exchanged into USD, then exchanged again into your currency. This may not apply for yourself, but for others, its like paying commission twice. That's why the banks are making such a lot of money. They do this probably to offset the level of fraud etc. The system used by Central I suspect is the Bangkok Bank system. I saw the leaflets at my condo last week at reception. It said you can let the customer pay in their home currency etc. Cheers SaucyTim

They do this at the hotels, too. I didn't notice for years but you get the stupid hotel's exchange rate if you pay for the hotel via credit card. From now on, I'm paying in cash...

If you read your credit card contracts carefully, you will notice that most US Banks issuing credit cards are now charging 0 - 3 percent if you buy anything and the bill is NOT in US Dollars. That of course means Thai Baht, but also Euros, Yen, etc. I don't know the rates that all the banks, but anything back by Citibank (including the AT&T cards) are at 3%, MBNA (now purchased by Bank of America is 3%, some of the smaller banks backed by Bank of Scotland is 2%. I did get a Capitol One card specifically because they did not charge anything for charging in other than US Dollars. I don't know for sure, if this relates to your issue on the post. Maybe when they make the exchange at the Emporium and you have one of the above cards, the extra charge is tacked on automatically dependent on the bank issuing the card. Then again, it just might be the people screwing you over, like you said.
