I have had some experience with living a relatively quiet existence in Thailand amoung the Thai's. Its not for everyone - and at times its not easy- But this post is designed for western men who have had living in the west and need to escape - but whose resources might mean considering a cheaper alternative to a hustle bustle existence- Firstly, visas- If you dont have a wife and are not over 50 years of age - you will have to do visa runs- Laos is an excellent source of the 2 month visas- its 1000 baht to obtain and takes 2 days tops. Shorter crossings like Mai sai in the north (burma) or down south malaysia - or renewals - Aranayaphet to the south east - all will figure - But Laos was my favorite as you got 2 months at a time- A wife (thai) and 400,000 in bank will secure you a year. When over 50...its way easier get a retirement one- (double above in bank) Typical rents in a countryside situation (like hick town out of village) will be around 4000-6000 for a house and shop downstairs- a month (and thats a nice place- a fraction of cities) We only rent a shop and house it has many bedrooms and two bathrooms and has a wide area to sell stuff- Obviously, this will be your womans occupation and it wont support your needs - but appease hers- Expect to buy stock of around $7000 usd and costs of another $150 a month. So thats $10,000 USD to get her happy and never expect to see a cent- Next is the ways to make money- If they have land around the home - cows can be bought for 6000 a pop females- buy 20 for 120,000 baht ($3000 USD ) and Two strong bulls for 30,000 Total $4000 usd- In 2 years you should have 35 cows (profit 100,000 baht) allow 10% unexpected shit- 3 years on we now have tripled the herd from 22 to over 60 150 baht a day for non family to walk cow- Changing crops to sweet Potatoe yeilds alot more money in some instances- Pigs are also worth investing in- But the easiest money was rice being crossed from a border where it was cheaper - In my case Cambodia- To do this you need a motorized Cart - pully 3 wheeler worth about 100,000 baht and close proximity- Its the family interest- you buy 100,000 baht of rice and get back about 108,000 baht- This will net you about 24,000 a month. Total revenue you can expect from an outlay of around 800,000 baht ($30,000usd) is an income of about - 35,000 a month- Forget about all of the shops revenue and 40% of the rice revenue- You can butterfly on visa runs and away from home- Its essential you get internet and sat Tv and heaps of books and a good motor bike- but life is kinda easy and sweet and when on a visa run you so look forward to letting of steam- Correctly managed 2 million is a comfortable beginning to go life in the country - I recommend more - but its enough if your desperate to escape- Infact 1 million is the bottom line if your prepared to live humbly- I ended up back in Australia working on boats - but will return sometime next year- So long as the Thais can make 15,000 a month that they can keep your always welcome- and they love watching their cow herd expand- so long as they get it you can sell 5 when you need the cash- breeding is free its natural and happens like clock work- The bottom line is have $40,000 at least and a country girl and plan - (and Keep another $5000 in reserve) Most of my money is in a super fund for when I am 60- I dont recommend you run away without some nest egg for later- make sure you have enough to return to farangland if you need to and keep yourself healthy, and Thailand Country is a cheap alternative- But just be prepared to live alot differently and be loyal- *(well until its visa time) Or some girl in another village hits on you 30 miles from home on one of your motor bike rides through the lush green countryside- :: As I say this was written for those that want to get out but have limited resources-

... nice summary DG... while I have no first hand experience at this, I have spent a lot of time in remote upcountry tambons... a buddy living upcountry shared with me some useful insights on being happy in the world of a century past. ... adding to what you shared, DG, my friend talked to me about the unexpected 'incidental' family expenses that took a toll on him and his wife early on, until he put his foot down and got it all under control. ... as a 'rich' farang, he explained that he is a target by every member of his wife's family (some so friggin' remote they are more related to amoeba than to his wife), and many residents in the community. ... many there view their jobs, what they do to make a living, as how to move money from that person over there and into my pocket without really producing or providing anything of value... by deceit, hook, or crook... it's a common 'job' here. ... a critical understanding he drilled into his wife is that she is there to protect him... he let her know that everyone who ever met her will try to get into HIS bank account, through HER... shortly after they moved upcountry, he said there was a hit parade of bad luck stories, get rich quick investment schemes and appeals short term loans (just long enough to win the lottery, or to buy uniforms for the new job they are sure to get next week, you see?). ... he made her understand that she is the gate keeper... that if his money is gone, so is he... were she a softie, he would be a goner. ... to avoid being branded as a hard-hearted and cheap pariah in the family and community, he pays tuition for children in the family, and even for the most needy kids that the school identifies to him... all tolerable costs and worthwhile investments in the futures of Thai kids (although, what passes as education in the upcountry schools would just appall educators in developed countries). ... so you might put in a line item to cover the costs for ‘communal lifestyle expectations’... sort of your very own CSR program... get that right, and you can meaningfully change the lives of the next generation, and be a local hero (well... in YOUR mind, maybe, if not theirs).

Where to begin...? Ofcourse everything your friend says is so true- In her Village which is 19 kilometers from the house/shop it was way worse managing the stories and requests for money- A typical day would see numerous aunties wander in - and Uncles and assorted neighbors - Then the hard luck woman and husbandless widows and f***ed up disabled- Even when she (my wife went out ) a woman of say 40 would turn up with her 16 year old daughter wearing lipstick and try and borrow 500 baht- Never ever go there! :: Mostly the money was small amounts for 100 Baht or less but in a week I would see 2000 disappear - so my wife started a borrowing plan where she took over what was happening- It works this way- Uncles and Aunties and relations got interest free loans which strangely they all repaid none above 3000- Most about 500 baht- Everyone else had to put up the rice equalivalent from their stores which all had (as it was a farming area) and after a month repay the loan or 10% Quickly she had a business going- But it was both to annoying and hard for me to have constant requests- The local school I helped and the monks no worries but in a peasant community you had too much to tolerate- So we moved from her large farm after buying life stocks and machinery and opened a shop in a small town that supplies the nearby villages with things like farming tools and goods wholesale- There little requests were made- Woman though would follow you about for short times til they knew who your wife was- Charity has its place and it was good for the soul to actually have a some social work going on- Every so often I would put on a big free dinner and party back on the farm and slaughter a pig and get some beers in and some music- Donate things to the school Buy real poor children some clothes and help the mother The head monk always looked happy to see me or my wife at the temple as he knew the envelop he got would have 500 baht in it- Plus when they collected alms in the morning they knew the food would include nice fresh pork and crackling or banana rice- The father was the biggest problem until I paid a doctor 2000 baht to tell him he had a year to live unless he stopped drinking - And then I drugged him on anti depressants and paid someone to look after his fields for 6 months and he just watched soccer- Then he was cured and thanked me sincerly- we went out and bought some bulls together and he was wrapped- stayed sober and happy- But yes relations can be a worry- As can cops in small towns- I drop of a bottle of samsung whiskey and some sodas every friday night to the station and leave- That seemed to keep me in good stead- Basically it was boring at times - But the countryside was amazing to ride around in- And I lived a real existence- Went to weddings and funerals- Saw additions to families gained some respect- Slept with a woman you had to be nice to before f***ing and that was only when she wanted it - But it was great to sometimes live simply- To see farmers rejoice in the rains - harvest time- There was alot of real thailand to behold

hey, I tried everything to make money..... lost at everything but one thing.... fish ponds... after the intitial costs of buying the land and getting a tractor to dig the holes, it cost only around 1,000 baht to stoclk thwm with fry... and they reproduce constantly.... feeds not only the family but a lot of neighbors too. A great source of protien, easy to catch and everyone eats them. This by far has been my best investment in Isaan. The cow thing did not work well for me as they tend to wonder off and if they eat in someone elses field, they want baht for compensation. I too have clamped down on what I will spend money on.... hell, they had nothing when I met them... their life is far better now, but I stopped the spending there a long time ago....

Fortunately everything I have done works- reasons are we are not so high up like Issaan The rains come - as we are at the foothills of Cambodia- But I know where your coming from Thailife- I have seen numerous people get burnt in a dry unproductive Issaan context where farming is concerned. However I married Real farmer- So cows were an extension to existing ones- The herd is whipped tightly through villages and crops- Even I can yell and make correct steerage- In a community of thousands of oxen and cattle it is not easy- Damage is done but rarely _to others crops- A good cow hand and 8 dogs usually keeps it ok til way outside But its wise you stopped (spendIng) as you either know how to make money or not- We do- As I siad with complete honesty ""every single one (plan works) But none were my plans- Kuri Kui is right on the cambodian border at the foothills of mountains but flats and lush soil sourround the area- Crossing into Kmyer is easy (for them) and cross purchase of rice common- Its bought cheap sold at profit this side- but hard work- Breeding animals is again no problem - though chickens should be avoided in that context- The trouble is making small profits is easy just not large- Issaan presents alot of problems I have tried to advise my brother many times about farming there - To no avail- He is back in Chiang mai where he is best suited- I dont think Thailife is discouraging too many by saying "he stopped spending money along time ago- he is just being honest- The family and community I am referring to are very formidable and good at what they do- Fish farming is more an issaan requirement at surivivial Where- as "these" farmers seem better off with lifestock and better rainfalls and quality land- I have seen my brothers land in issaan (his wifes) it is barren and despressing and the farmers waiting for daughters to send money- Its no wonder Issaan more girls fleeing than anywhere else- Its poor- I would struggle there- But when I said Farm girl I meant "real farm girl and Farming area- This is a very different context to Thailifes story- Its not hard as outlined to make money in a farming area if you have some money to invest- Our success in all things also comes down to 4 things - Wifes family work hard- Own alot of land- Rainfall- Know how There is a big difference between "real farmers who can control cattle and grow crops and toil at other projects" And a man who watches a fish farm and sips white whisky and watches yet another farang turn up to meet mamma from Pattaya- The shop is also in its own right making money about $1000 US a month But thats her doing and dammed if I see a cent- She f***s me and looks after me when I live there because I keep the shop going for her (rent) But be under no illusions country living is way cheaper in any context if you know what to do and what not too :: But some folks is just city folks

That raises up another issue- "god bless america" Sure, but the Aussie economy is doing every bit as well if not better- We have oppurtunities too- I can rountinely come back here for work- Employment oppurtunities much greater- Unemployment running at 5% (USA 10%) Wages are better here for the average Joe- But I digress- The dual worlds I co inhabit - I have concluded it is we"the farang" that is poor- Not them- Poverty in social contexts is a fine line - But in my context, where I make $80,000 a year here - Or $17,000- $20,000 there and in a happy enviroment- In my rural context there is not affliction of poverty in the family I am now a part off- Though the peasant are poor but all are fed- The main consideration is love and happiness - Harold- I could have taken her here - (Australia) but I am better of in Thailand- happier - and in context have enough to age 60 when I get my superannution which is my fathers house sold and other contributions- (or 20 million Thai baht) I love the simple life - so long as I retain a get out of jail card to go sin every 60 days for a few- The people of Thailand are I have noticed happier then the blessed Americans - and even Australians who have it much easier at present- They wish for those places thinking money buys happiness- Something I learnt doesnt- Sure being poor (if your thai in a poor area sucks) But the underlying family bonds - love - support - nature - buddha - and happiness- makes them far richer then the superficial consumer driven shallow audacious feministical greater western economies- Like Liverpools (the football tune athem) In Thailand "YOU"LL NEVER WALK ALONE" :: ::
