Did a search and not much activity. I need to transfer around $63k and get it exchanged at a favorable place. I am Buying a small factory plus two flat residence in an BKK industrial suburb. I will providing my wife's sister with the cash. She is running the factory and paying rent to me. I do live in the US. First off I trust them 100%. Second I can afford to loose 63k. Third my wife is employed here and loves her life here in the US. I am simply asking how one would go about accomplishing this. Should I just carry the money and simply go to a Bank. Can I negotiates a better rate?

... if you plan transfers, you might consider opening a dollar denominated foreign currency account when you are in Thailand again... available to anyone... easy to transfer foreign deposits... once onshore, you can then decide how best to exchange.

Thank you for the advise. I am now exploring these options. This type of practical info is not so easy to uncover. For info we are expanding a cracker factory--run at my sister in laws place. Needs to expand--now have new friers and will be able to hire 4 additional people--from issan. Her product has been on the local news and sells out at the stands we currently supply. We will be also making a east of Thailand chilli spice/sauce. Her sister is well know for this. 7-11 has shown some interest in the product regionally. Anyway the top floor is mine with modern toilet and roof access. Will be used mainly for vegetable drying. Once we reach a sustained volume we will apply for product license. gym

Can't your bank advise you? Or your other financial advisers who helped you to decide to make this investment (surely if they were clever enough to come up with the investment they are also clever enough to know the best way to transfer the cash) ?

Quote: from Blonk on 1:23 am on Jan. 30, 2011 ...If you have a work permit or registered company in Thailand you can open a bank account here...
You're probably right but those things are not pre-requisites. You can open a Thai bank account without them; just living here is enough; or saying you're living here (and getting a letter from the local village boss confirming that you live here). But once you have a Thai account you still need to transfer the money. Having your own Thai bank account does not make that any easier than transferring it to someone else's Thai account.

Gym - once you've got the Thai bank account details into which you want to transfer the cash, just write to your own bank in farangland and tell them you would like to transfer the money to it. They'll charge you for that service and they may also ask you to provide some additional info about the Thai bank account (like an IBAN ID number) - but the branch of the Thai bank where the receiving account is held should be able to give you all that extra info. It's easy. I'm sure farangs do this all the time when they send money for houses to be built etc. I know I did. The rate you get won't be negotiable. You'll get whatever rate the bank offers on the day of the transfer. But your bank will automatically try to get the best rate for you that it can. Your its customer and it wants to keep you so trying to get you a good exchange rate is just part of its normal service.

You can open a savings account with your passport only at nearly any Thai bank and get an ATM card. A checking account takes a work permit. Open the account, get all the pertinent transfer information and do your business. A transfer of this size might raise some eyebrows so be prepared to answer the questions...money laundering and all that. Tell them it's for a house/car/hookers and whiskey. You should have no problems.
