Spot on re; Salons vs. Health Clubs for the reasons mentioned. Good call.
Just one nitpick; The Marriott Riverside barely qualifies as 5star if at all. There is likely ot be more difficulty at the more "snobbish" places.

I referred to the Montien Riverside Hotel in my post, not the Marriot. I don't know how many stars the Montien was. It was a pretty nice place, but might have only a 4 star job.
In any case, it is often worthwhile checking out the salons in hotels. I don't get to Thailand as often as I would like, but generally speaking, in China it is more often than not available.

I also agree that the top end 5 star hotels can be a bit problematic as they go to great lengths to try to keep up a good image. I have found that often times hotels geared more for the business travels tend to be less strict than those catering for tourists, especially families. However, often times you can have a discrete word with the coneirge and they will usually give you a few pointers. A nice tip usually helps, but one should be discrete, tactful and certainly not be vulgar when making such an inquiry.

I might add that when getting an in room massage in a 5 star hotel it is best to let the massuse make the suggestion for extras. This can avoid embarresment on both sides if this service is not normally offered. If they normally do this, they will most definitely make an offer, especially if you get a bit aroused during the normal massage.
I'm not sure if I have been unusually lucky, but out of approximately 50 (I guess) in room massages over the past 15 years, I would say about 95% offered extras. Your milage may vary.
