Skip, from the map, Fortune Hotel looks like the best choice as it is strategically located in the center of all types of entertainment. ÝTo its east, there are RCA, Mona Lisa, Meeree, To the north, there are the Ratchada strip. ÝNew Cleo is west of it and of course go southward there are Soi Cowboy and Sukumvit. ÝBut I was in BKK 2 months ago and I feel that BKK traffic nowadays is getting unbearable. ÝA simple 5 blocks taxi ride can easily cost you 15 or 20 minutes. ÝAnd if you stay in Fortune, no matter where you want to go, you have to take a cab (except New Cleo). Ý Therefore since my last trip, I told myself my next hotel no matter what will be near one of the BTS station. ÝAt least I can skip the frustrating cab ride if I want to go to Nana or Soi Cowboy. Ý
BK, where is IDA Entertainment? ÝNever heard of it. Ý

PINGA: Well, this time I was not surprised when you said you couldn't find the fishbowl at Emmanuelle. For a newbie this is a bit complicated if you don't ask few details before hands....I think you were hanging around at the lobby area, where the bar and "restaurant" are located. Well, the fishbowls are at the end of a short hall connecting the lobby with the fishbowl area (left of the main bar).
There is one fishbowl on the left divided into two small discrete ones devoted for sideliners, while the main fishbowl (big one) is on your right and usually gathering the busty TGs of the establishment.

Catwoods- Yes bro, all observations of yours have merit. But, may I suggest one option that will render the traffic congestion into the realm of entertainment? In a word- motorcycle taxis. Jump on the back of one of these, tuck in your elbows, and in the very worst of the BKK snarls you'll be continually moving towards your destination. I got from soi Cowboy to Fortune in <10 min. (on avg.) in the middle of 5 pm rush hour on many, many days. Sure, it's a trade off between the a/c confines of the cab and the wind in your face priouettes bobbing around rearview mirrors, but for me this adds to the joi-de-vivre on the mongers' trail in LOS.
And let me share another observation as well, you are right about traffic from Fortune moving down the strip to Poseidon (for instance), it does get very slow at times. However, in the other direction, from Fortune to Asoke where you can hit the Cowboy or Asoke BTS station the traffic always seems to flow quite fast. Amazingly fast, from what I have witnessed, so much so that it is not at all a bother going in this direction, but in the opposite yes it can be bad. Still and all each hotel and place has their merits and Fortune's merits are as you wrote- central to many fine attractions.

Another problem here is that it is the start of the monsoon season, motorcycle taxi mode of transportation is not weatherproof. ÝBut heck, I do agree that it is the fastest and cheapest means of getting your butt from point A to B.

Motor-cycle taxi! Yes they may be able to get me to the MP faster. But I am not going to risk my life or limb for 1,2 hours pleasure (in fact mine is usually shorter than that).
I had motor-cycle-related accident before in LOS. And I feel that more than 50% of Thai hired drivers are suicidal.
Afterall, heaven can wait.

No! Bro, I can understand you trepidation but give em' another chance! Hell, the rush hours would probably be the safest time.
Think about it! All the cars are stationary, grid-locked and you're glidding thru, around and between them in a nifty slalom jig. As much as I've heard bad stories about the Thai drivers I've been impressed with the abilities of every single motorcycle taxi driver I've encountered so far. If I were to fear anything about it it would be the moments where you're exposed to cross-traffic, the Ýrunning red-lights maniacs which seems unlikely in BKK rushhour. But alas...to each his own. 
Still and all, the thing to be aware of is that Fortune Hotel to the Asoke BTS is a real quick cab ride any time of day. And once the subway is up all one will have to do is cross Ratchadapisek to catch and slip down the stairs to access the subway.
rmud- TOTALLY GUEST FRIENDLY!! All they care about is that you are booked for double if you want to bring a gal up. Every evening a guy will stand at the elevator banks with a roster of guest and check your name against how you booked your room. In the one instance where I was asked to pay 'extra' ÝI'd brought 2 sweeties back at once and the desk asked for a joiner fee of 700baht. for the 2nd sweetie only. Better yet, there is never a 'walk-of-shame' looks from the staff, they'll give you a wink and a nod if anything and compliment you on your selection most likely. Fortunes rooms, rates, and location all ad up to a very, very good value in BKK (IMHO) Ý

Damn! Sure enough adhoc, I have yet to see the monsoons there, so you are right. They'll be no option for this fan once the streets are slick. No sirree! That'll be where I draw the line. 
On a dry day in Bangkok though, I just enjoy the hell outta watching the manouvering of these guys while the breezes are cooling me off and we zip along thru the traffic snarls. I find it envigorating!
