Staying on Suhkumvit near Soi Cowboy I had trouble getting taxis to take me to the massage parlors on Ratchada Road even though I gave them directions - ÝRatchada Soi Sip Jet, asked them to take me to nearby hotels (emerald hotel) showed them on my tourist map (in english) where I wanted to go, showed them cards from the MPs with maps and addresses (in thai script). ÝSome of them clearly had trouble understanding my poor thai pronounciation. ÝOthers would counter offer to take me to Cupidy or Mona Lisa, which I would refuse. ÝSome would eventually flat out refuse to take me where I wanted to go. ÝI always followed the advice I read here previously to hail cabs that are moving and avoid any that are parked or hanging around soliciting rides and make sure they use the meter. Ý
The first thing I tried was to skip taxis all together and go to MPs that are along the BTS skytrain route. ÝI tried Chao Phraya 2. ÝThe girls there were fun but clearly didn't match up with the quality of those available at the Ratchada road MPs.
The next thing I tried was to combine the skytrain with taking a taxi. ÝI figured if I got out of the Sukhumvit area the taxi drivers would be less hard core, I might be circumventing some rush hour traffic, by taking the skytrain to Saphan Kwai the taxi ride would be 50% shorter and I personnally enjoy riding on the sky train.
My experience was that this worked fine. ÝI did it several times and I'll probably do it again on my next trip. ÝThe taxi drivers were much more pleasant. ÝThey took me where I asked to go on the meter. ÝI didn't have to negotiate. ÝOn the other hand, I doubt I saved any time using this route. ÝThe drivers did tend to have more trouble understanding my accent. ÝOne of the drivers got lost. ÝOne of the taxis broke down. ÝThe neighborhoods we drove through were less than great.
The other alternative I'm thinking about is staying in one of the hotels along Ratchada road, though this would cut me off from Soi Cowboy / Nana which I enjoy as well.
Does anybody have any other suggestions on getting to the Ratchada MPs with less hassle?

In future, if the cab driver is at a "loss", tell him to pick up the CB Radio and radio back to the station control for further advise. ÝDuring my early visits here in LOS, I had my fair share of such encounters and I just told the cab driver to use that CB Radio for directions and it worked all the time.
Another thing, the full name of the road is Ra-cha-da-pi-sek. ÝOnce the cab driver pass Fortune Town on your left, and right after Robinsons, you will hit the MP neighbourhood.

I have used taxis quite often to go from Sukhumvit to the Ratchada M.P.'s .
Every time I have instructed the taxi driver , "Ratchada , Huay Kwang " and have been taken there with no problems and no diversions .
Although I am not a Farang , I am not Thai and I cannot put 2 words of Thai together , so I guess it is not that I am any easier to understand .
I think it just might have to do with taxi drivers recognizing the words Huay Kwang better than the word Ratchada when spoken by a non-Thai .

yes, Tourist, it happened to me too. After I got out from Emmanulle, flaged down a couple of taxis. Told them I wanted to go to Sukumvit. Shook their heads, no go. either they didn'tunderstand what I said or they don't go there!! Finally, got on one taxis and told the driver I wanted to go to Sukumvit and Soi, Majestic Suite. the traffic was terrible. To make things worst he didn't know exactly where I wanted to go. On Sukumvit, he turned towards Soi Cowboy which is the opposite direction of Majestic Suite. The fare turned out to be over 120 baht, I gave him 100 baht and got off. They need to build a skytrain to go to that MPs area. I understand there is a plan to build a skytrain going over there. The taxis driver seemd to know Landmark Hotel tho'.

Hello everyone! Gyaos here (from the early days of BK Tonight). Almost all the hotels carry a small card-size piece of paper called a "taxi card" which has the address of the hotel. Get one and show the driver. It is written in English and Thai.
That can at least get you back from the MP.  I always carry my Windsor Suite Taxi Card in case of an emergency. Works every time.....to Soi 20.

A friend of mine tried it the last time in BKK ,The card from the Hotel.... Still did not work... had a tough time getting back to the hotel... JW Marriot .... in cab

Yes, indiandick, there is no excuse for the taxis driver not to know where JW Marriot is. JW Marriot is a nice hotel. The buffet is marvellous but not cheap. I was there in March dinner time, the bill came to more than 900 baht. Sometimes, I think I was being over charged.

sometimes, taxi drivers would refuse lengthy fare because they get more money with several shorter fares. it is illegal to refuse, of course, but this is thailand. sukhumvit to ratchada is pretty far and you can double or triple the time during rush hours. also, there are certain times where the drivers have to return their cabs to the base.

You're right johnnyc on both counts. For some stupid reason one cab co. shifts end at about 6 PM. So from 5 on some cabs only want to take you in the direction of the garage.
But at any hour some drivers don't want any fare that takes them above the flag, 35 baht. You can't blame them though for not wanting to get into traffic jams because wait-time doesn't pay as well as distnace.
