Thai's get sick from the food also. I did a survey with my regular BG's. They get stomach cramps and diarrhea. The reason I'm interested in this for part of the time I was in the army, I was involved with food sanitation and since I don't like o get sick, I'm careful where I eat.

Regarding stomach cramps and diarrea: I cannot confirm this, and thinking about the typical live style of the BGs - sex, drugs and rock'n'roll - it might also have other reasons. I was on a pure Thai food diet last time (will do it again next time), including regular trips to the carts, and I just felt great! Asian food is in general much more healthy than the typical rubbish you get in the West, especially the Fast Food in McD style. http://www.cnn.com/2001/HEALTH/diet.fitness/01/03/thai.soup/ Western food is in general way too fat and salty and contains too much meat, refined sugar and other "empty" calories -> people gain overweight but are malnourished at the time. In short, eating mainstream western food is a good recipe to kill yourself slowly...

Well spoken, Fritz. You'd be better off eating your own shit than Western-style fast food like McDonalds. Thai food is extremely healthy and nutritious and best of all, it's dirt cheap.

Quote: from Ballsburstin on 5:32 am on Dec. 28, 2002 ... Never been sick from the carts, though I do buy cooked stuff, not the raw pork that some of the Isaan pepople really like (don't want to get liver flukes).
OK. I couldn't resist - the girls had a plate of the larb muu, raw, with chilies and basil, and I'd had a few drinks to remove my sensibilities. So the question is, how dangerous are the raw pork dishes here? The girl I was eating it wish kept talking about a pill that she and her friends would take every few months, if they ate the raw pork very often. Trichinosis doesn't seem like a very pleasant thing. Liver flukes doesn't exactly sound like something I want, but not as bad as trichina. What is this pill she kept talking about? Google doesn't seem to bring up information. Damn tasty meal, though. Being the idiot that I am, that it's dangerous makes it all the more appealing.

- A> It's called Lahp Leuat, Blood Salad & is VERY Eesahn
- B> I've eaten heaps of it, and only got sick once, but that was beef & a dish called Goi (similar), & about 7 years ago, & only lasted half a day
- C> in this link about trichinosis they mention that pork isn't the big issue, but more so wild game
- D> I think the pills they mention are more for worms than anything else, and I also think that the spices should kill any parasites. Garlic is known to kill parasitic worms
- E> Even the Thais stopped eating beef Lahp Leuat when Mad Cow Disease was going round, and the pork version tastes better. Beef was the default for Lahp Leuat in the past

I've been told by many Thais that pappaya salad shouldn't be eaten on its own because it often causes some degree of diarrhoea. It seems to be a very popular snack with (at least some) BGs, who never seem to eat it with rice. The only time I've had food poisoning in Thailand (24 hours rolling and writhing on bathroom floor wishing I was dead food poisoning) was after eating raw oysters on Samui. (Which in retrospect was a silly thing to do anyway.) I've never had problems with street food, even raw prawns next to a khlong.
