RTB, here my reviews on the restaurants you named:
1. Zanotti: to tier but top pricy
2. Mabeba: the original chef who started this restaurant, Fabio, is a friend of mine and he has now moved to open a new place "Giusto" in Suk soi 19. Now Mabeba is a strange place with no identity.....not worthy!
3. Piola: the original concept was ok, a easy going and generous country restaurant.....no menu available, you got to eat only what they decide to serve day by day...wine is too pricy, quality is going down.....owner is a sucker!
4. I'll invite you to Limoncello next time...ask Farangbha & NM how is it......

Phuket...best Italian Restaurant? Da Mario, said by a funny Italian (me) and confirmed by all the Italians expat and tourists down there.

Thai food is great and it well deserves the 3rd place in the world, but sometime, a nice break is needed...today I had lunch in a Lebanese resturant in Ploenchit.....tomorrow, who knows? This is a great thing of Bangkok and all the similar metropolis: freedom to chose food according to the mood!

Dear all, you will excuse me for being a bit radical while we talk of food...
which, as well as for ladies, are two of my mayor priorities in life.

That is why I believe that it is nice to appreciate different "cuisine", but if you really wanna do it, you should always eat local food... wherever you are.

Because this is not a forum for gourmets, I won't bother you about how strong is the carrots flavour in Thailand and how weak are the red chilli peppers if you compare them with the small ones that you can buy in the Mediterranean area.

According with the original nature of this forum I prefer other examples:
can you appreciate the difference between a second generation born in Germany Thai girl and a native TG in LOS?
Apart from appearance?

Globalisation is spoiling us and makes us to think that we should feel better while we have the freedom of choice to eat whatever the mood suggest to:

personally I think that there must be something wrong in the mood of those that may wish to eat "fois gras" with a bottle of exquisite aged Bordeaux during june in patong beach... as I can't imagine to be enjoyable to eat papaya salad during winter at Cape North.

Lets leave the myth that you can find and have whatever you want in NYC to the Newyorkers, those that are stuck in there... of course.

Globalisation gives us 'cape' grapes, or Seville (sp) oranges, or Alaskan salmon, or etc etc...

It also gives us McDonalds...

You take the rough with the smooth...

Mr Alan
I think it is boring to eat the same kind of food every day, regardless of where you are. Certainly one should try out the Thai cuisine when in LOS, but that can get old 3 times a day, 7 days a week.

Same thing applies at home as when traveling to LOS. I frequently eat Thai food in the US, and it is on average quite good. I would go crazy if I didn't eat Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Italian, Mexican, etc, food on a regular basis at home. The US, being a nation of immigrants from around the world, probably is a little more diverse than some other countries in its cuisine, but BKK certainly has its share of people from abroad also.

There are some decent Italian places in BKK (although I would not include Pan Pan in that list), so I don’t see anything wrong with eating at them occasionally.

Agreed diversity is the spice of life... Not found any good 'Mex' on Phuket.. Also get a major jones for a real good curry..

The oddest thing is that I have never had 'indian' curries anywhere on earth as good as the ones in the Midlands (Bradford, Brum, etc) UK.. Most times I ask its still Bangladeshi chefs but even in India nothing touches a good 'British' 'Indian'...

Is that nuts ???

Mr Alan
No, it is not nuts. Indian food (especially Tandoori) in the US is also quite good. I think one of things is that the ingredients are better quality in the US and the UK, and people are willing to pay more money for the food.

Same is true of most Thai food in the US.

No - as Indian is by far the largest ethnic minority in Britain, with strong cultural ties since colonization of India by the British Empire.

Caronte,

You clearly know your Italian food so perhaps you could comment on some of these restaurants

1. Scoozi. yen akard.
2. Antonios. Suk 31 (owned by brother of Scoozi owner)
3. Calderazzo's. Langsuan.
4. Gianni's same area

These (along with Zanotti's are basically my faves... looking for something interesting in Suk.)

Hmmm and Limoncello is owned by the Zanotti's guys right. I hear they will be opening something similar in Suk 24 at the end of the year.

And what gives with L'Opera (Suk 39) - the Italians I have met love it but I have never had a good meal there.

Oh, and finally, what are your top 3 BKK Italian restaurants.
