The NY Steakhouse at the Marriott is a disgrace. Lousy, frozen meat, and every potato side dish has either been taken out of a bag from a supermarket and deep-fried or microwaved. Why anyone pays more than 200 baht for such crap is a mystery. What's more, it's in a 3-star hotel.

The only way to enjoy a really good steak in Thailand is to find a butcher with a good cut for sale and then cook it at home. Leave the Marriott's little steakhouse to natives who don't know better or can't cook.

Well I guess you should stay at home as you fail as either a hotel or restaurant critic. On what grounds to you give the hotel a 3-star rating when in fact they are one of the few hotels in town with an ongoing upgrade program and recently remodel all the bathrooms and changed out all the beds and bedding.

Secondly in regards to the NY Steakhouse, I had a long talk with the manager this week. You are dead wrong about the beef being frozen and he says his may problem is keeping enough inventory of steaks as they are moving out so fast in both the NY Steakhouse and lower Japanese place. All the beef is imported chilled and not frozen.

I asked him about the tomato's as you cannot find tomatoes as big and as good as they serve there. He went back and checked with the chef and told me that they were imported from Austrailia. The potatoes were also imported because they cannot find large enough ones in Thailand. In fact, he said almost all the meat and produce is imported, hence the high prices.

So jonstroud2001, if you can tell me where to buy equivalent tomatoes in BKK as they serve in the NY Steak house beefstake tomato salad, I am all ears.

I prefer dining out as I enjoy other after dinner activities besides having to clean up the dishes.

I will have to give it a try.

Also, I heard that Hamilton's is very good in the Dusit Thani. I have been to a number of good restaurants in the Dusit Thani hotel. The outside of the hotel looks like a Howard Johnson's hotel gone bad, in line with the Thai philosophy on never doing a outside facelift to a building once it is built, but the restaurants in the hotel are quite enjoyable.

I have heard mixed reports about Chok Chai either real good or real bad there seems to be no in between opinion. Well I plan to go to the actual Chok Chai farm this month. I wonder if it is like Seafood restaurant where you can just pick out your cow, bash it on the head and throw it on the barbie? I guess I will see.

Yup, the exterior of the Dusit Thani needs a redo urgently, but they certainly do keep the interior spaces up to par.

Chokchai Steakhouse: There's one on the connecting street between Asok and Sukh. soi 23 where I once made the mistake of trying the Isaan cut. Talk about gristle! I left what looked to be a very complex and partially finished jigsaw puzzle on my plate.

So I guess with a region that specilizes in eating bugs, the Issan cut is one to stay away from. Have you ever seen the cows in Issan? They look like the starving children ads in Ethopia.

The manager of a restaurant is very unlikely to admit to something very hard to prove, like whether his steaks are imported chilled or frozen, but the aftertaste you get with a frozen steak is different (in most cases) to what you get from a chilled steak. The steaks I've had there have had a ghastly aftertaste not readily associated with finest chilled steaks.

His remarks about potatoes are a lie. Pure and simple. I have no difficulty finding local potatoes that weigh up to a kilo each, so the head of an hotel chain's F&B dept should find it even easier. Besides, their standard microwaved "baked potato" is no giant. The french fries and hash browns come straight out of a catering supplier's frozen bag of potato products with the only input from the restaurant being to deposit the frozen items in boiling oil before placing on a diner's plate.

I prefer cherry tomatoes, which are rather small, but each to his own. I suspect you would have to import tomatoes if you want them very big and tasty. This is hardly a priority to me in a steakhouse, but if it matters to you then I'm glad they got something right.

As for my ability (or lack of) when it comes to judging how many stars an hotel really deserves let's just say that I've run better places - with better and more famous F&B outlets - than the Bangkok Marriott. I realise my opinion is bound to be biased, especially as I dislike international hotel franchises in general and inner city branches in particular.

All this detracts from the original point which is where to get the best steaks in town. To date, I haven't read a single post about a restaurant that inspires any confidence I will find something to my liking.

I ate at the Chock Chai Farms restaurant near Korat not too long ago. I thought the meats (we had 5 adult orders) were about a little above average judged by American restaurant chain standards. No where near gormet, but edible and I would repeat. But nothing to write home about.

I've stopped at the original Chok Chai "The Farm" many times on the way up to Issan. The Chok Chai special a bacon wrapped filet migon that is aged thirty days is to die for (700 baht). I consider this steak equal to anything you could get at Morton's of Chicago in the US. Do not pass up a chance to try this steak at the farm. I start salivating for this steak as soon as I get into the car to go north. I have only dined at the Chok Chai by Korat, so cannot answer for the quality of the other outlets. I have stopped and the resteruant has been out of the Chok Chai Special, it is limited to availibility. This was a major head banger for me. I was so dissappointed and behaved so badly, I apoligiused to the server and tipped him 200 baht.
