Usually lunch at Fuji while in the vicinity of Siam Square. but it's been so long since I've had a truly great steak. How I miss the prize beef from the legendary Harris Ranch near Fresno, so I gave Outback a try, located on the second floor of Siam Tower, overlooking Discovery Plaza.
Liked the casual atmosphere, but otherwise not particularly impressed with this chain when dined there in California, also in Hawaii. This time same-same but different. The 10 oz (280g) Ribeye tender and succulent, like the bevy of beauties parading across the square in their monotone uniforms. With grilled onions, garlic mashed potatoes, a small carafe of wine, and piece of cheesecake, check bin 1400. Not a great steak by any means. but quite good for Thailand, without having to spend an arm and leg.

It's not in Siam SQ, but if you want a good steak that's not going to break the budget, I recommend Chokchai. They have on on Suk Soi 23 (on the soi that comes from ASOKE, I think it's called Paramsit). I have eaten at Outback and JW Marriot's steak house, but "bang for buck" I think this is much better.

Ah yes..... the Outback.
Quite quiet here but when I was working in Makati it was the place that all the Expats would meet and all the PI girls looking for Western husbands would prowl  ...

yep the steak at Harris Steakhouse is great. Flew in there once with a friend, they have that little airstrip next to I-5 and you park just a short walk to the restaurant. A great filet mignon and then back in the plane

Came here and decided to try their ribs. Now I aren't an expert on ribs as the only time I have them is in Thailand but I found the the sauce on these rather too sweet, and forget any smoky flavour here, it was non existant. Considering the cost 740baht (inc soft drink) I would have expected a way bigger portion size (2/3's of what you'd get for the same price at Tony Roma's). The side of vegetables was also inadequate
Largely unimpressed, I won't be back for the ribs. I just hope their steaks are better. The restaurant was doing a fairly brisk trade nontheless

I'm not that impressed with Harris Ranch beef. I 've stopped by and had their giant porterhouse...ok. If ordering beef I would just go for the best Omaha Beef.
I've only visited the Chokchai upcountry "The Farm" and the Chokchai special is excellent.

A few years back I was in tight with the Manager of the Outback Makati and he confessed to me that each of the restaurants in Asia modify the usual US recipes to meet local tastes, in PI that means very sweet.
However in Thailand I would have thought that they would spice it up some with a little chili padi albeit I am not surprised with sweet either...

... tried Outback a few times with no real luck... just formulaic bulk... it is not even Australian (American owned, operated franchise).

... more modest prices and still great steaks can be had... a guy in Phuket running a great not so little American BBQ joint (Don's, on the south end of the island) is raising, slaughtering and distributing his own beef.
... French-Thai... raised locally... finished the last sixty days on tapioca and soy beans... then slaughtered and aged 20+ days... non-frozen.
... limited distribution, but he does supply rib-eyes and t-bones to Great American Rib, up on Soi 36... I think they are priced at about THB 550-600... not just a good value, but a super value if the cook BBQ's them correctly.
... smoked ribs there are amongst the 2 or 3 best in class in BKK, as well... order the sauce on the side, though.
... you will get nothing close to good steak (or, proper ribs) at joints as Tony Roma's, or Outback Steakhouse... just bulk.
