Hey everyone! Gonna visit BKK next month. I want to eat fresh oysters for the experience. Any recommended places? I have heard of the Oyster Bar, Witch's Tavern, Seafood Bar.... Any other places? Has anyone eaten at these places and could they give me their opinion. I have eaten only canned oysters and have been told that there is a world of difference between the fresh and canned ones. Any advice would be appreciated!

After the recent floods its russian roulette-

Many sources have had waste and industrial pollution as a consequence of massive run offs-

Make it on your list of things to do next time round-

Though its only a small chance you get sick if you spin the proverbial barrel-

Good luck

I used to love fresh raw oysters.

Until I got food poisoning from some in Bangkok - wasting 10 days wretching in bed, broken only by trips to Bumrungrad when I could force myself to crawl out of bed, sicker than anyone could possibly imagine. As DG says, with raw oysters it's Russian Roulette - and if it hits you you would wish you had bitten the bullet instead.

Caveat Emptor!

... sa-WEET!... ja-HE-sus, man!... canned oysters!? never eaten a fresh oyster?

... good Gawd, man, you have got to do this... put The Oyster Bar on your hit list... best source for fresh oysters in the Kingdom, really geared for oyster purists... http://www.theoysterbarbangkok.com... a bit costly, but they are flown-in twice weekly from oyster beds well beyond Thailand's doubtful environs... they feature a number of different selections from the US Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

... sample a few of them all.

... now, I've had smoked oysters, which are nice, but raw canned oysters just sound nasty to me... fresh shucked oysters served on the half shell, served with ice, ice cold beer, are nothing as canned anything.

... maybe add a slight squeeze of lemon... maybe a little tobasco sauce... maybe eat it on a saltine cracker... that's about as far as you really want to go toward distracting your taste buds from a great tasting oyster... be careful not to cover them up... downing the bad boys with nothing can give you a full-on erection if they are those sweet little Louisana blue point oysters.

... holy jeez, man... if you like canned oysters, I think you're really going to like this... a lot.

... but... as Adventure Guy experienced... getting a bad oyster is like eating maggots out of the asshole of a bloated skunk... not good... no... no, not good at all... yeah, I'd avoid the local oysters... skunk butt maggots, not good.

Yes there is a huge world between canned and fresh oysters. Try l'Indigo (Silom Soi Convent) or Paris-Bangkok. Both are french restaurants and they have fresh oysters direct from France on a regular basis.
For sure they will have for Christmas/New Year season

thailife
true story.. I only found out I have a shell fish allergy when I ate a bunch of oysters..... Puked and shit at the same time for 1 hour.... NEVER AGAIN.

Here is my "I will never eat this shit again" list:

lamb
shellfish (except shrimp and crab)
all cheeses except Mozzarella, American, jack, cheedar
Southen Comfort (had a bad experience when I was 19 years old and just the smell of it creates a gag reflex)
All game meat
All organ foods (liver, etc)
mushrooms
fish sauce
fermented Isaan fish
Correction: Almost all Isaan food
Sea urchin
sea snails
snails
almost all sushi
seaweed
all pickled fish
canned sardines

Foods I like:

Steak, potatoes, chicken, almost all fruits and vegatables, pork, italian minus the things I mentioned above.

That's it. Keep it simple and I am a happy guy.... Pizza, cheeseburgers..... tacos, burritos, fast food.

You've only ever eaten only canned oysters?

Where do you come from?

And I was waiting for thailife to say he only likes cow's cock and onion's, urine smoothies and shit sandwiches. 5

The only raw oyster I eat is between a girl's legs .

It is true that you must be very careful with oysters. Even here in Singapore SGGirl got sick eating raw oysters from the Conrad.

The bright side is that in 'Russian Roulette' you have a one in six chance of hitting the bullet ...

... hey, China Sailor, I believe you are only partially correct on this one... you are absolutely correct in SIN and most of the rest of the world... but, 'Thai Roulette' is played with a double-barreled shotgun!

... that's just how it is when you are dealing with a Thai.
