Since I stayed at the Landmark, of course I ate at O'Briens. Open 24 hours and you can get some GOOD grill food there...

Not only that, because they have Thai food on the menu your BG is happy too...

cris4700,

Interesting post.

I did not try the burger there [but would have tried it have I'd known] (too bad) and the 99 baht burger for happy hour. And the 25 cent tequila shots. (Had I'd known).

I really don't like heavy customer service either.

I was simply waiting for a friend to show up so we could party on....

The staff at mango did not act like they are doing you a favor to order. Had to flag them down a few times.

"Burger has been extremely well done and not as good each day I went." Bummer dude, I hope it improves, I like the place too.

Had a burger today at Bully's for lunch. Quite tasty and fries were done very nicely as well.

I have to revive this thread, because my previous pick, Belgian Dog, seems MIA.

Anyway, I have realized that there can BE no best hamburger in LOS, or anywhere else, for that matter.

I say this, because I have realized that there are sub-classifications among burgers, and I am quite fickle, depending on what TYPE of burger I want on a given day.

For chain/franchise fast food, it's Burger King, hands down.

For burgers where the meat is the WHOLE story, I don't know, the Landmark, or some-such venue.

For a burger where the sandwich, with all that implies, is the main attraction, I have a new favorite, the BKK Grill on Wang Hin in, oh I don't know, Ladprao/Bang Khen. I will post better location info in a second, but first, let me describe the joint in question:

BKK Grill is a funky little, fully enclosed, aircon restaurant, which serves primarily Western-style meat dishes. They do have Thai food, but the almost exclusively Thai clientele can be seen to eat mostly American-style meat/salad/French fry dishes. A US ribeye, not particularly thick, but tasty, is like 200 baht, and comes with some shaved cabbage salad and a couple of French fries. Combinations of pork cutlet/ham/ribs/chicken in various arrays, are 90 baht up. They have a small but tasty spaghetti dish for 59 baht. None of these is going to put Great American Rib out of business, but you can eat there with pocket change, and have enough left for a bus.

The real discovery here is the beef cheeseburger, which goes for 59 baht, and is on the small side, diameter-wise, but quite full of meat. Not the kind of meat you'd order well, medium or rare, but two patties of very flavorful beef. There is none of the overabundance of pepper, used in other places to cover up a gamy piece of meat, nor is it cooked beyond recognition. The taste of good quality beef is there, even if it takes two patties to make enough for one sandwich.

The buns are toasted, and adequate, but the lettuce is the freshest I have ever encountered in a sandwich in LOS, and the tomato and onion are fine.

The basic burger comes with mayo, but I always add mustard on top, and some ketchup on the bottom. This is an homage to the great burger stand burgers I had as a kid, and as an adult at places like Fatburger in LA (and now, as a franchise, everywhere on the left coast of the US).

If you treat the burger as a sandwich, the tastes all blend into a memory of home (or not, as the case may be).

The down side is that the fries are too few, and sometimes not freshly enough cooked (a bit stale). Hey, it's 59 baht, all in. If you like fries, buy a side order and ask them to cook them up fresh.

The place is immaculately clean, young servers are pretty efficient, tables inside and out. Occasional specials on US beefsteaks, etc. Usual softdrinks and beer; a pitcher of their fruit punch is quite refreshing for two.

It's a little difficult to describe the location, as it is in an (almost) all-Thai neighborhood, but if you know the area, it is on Wang Hin at the intersection where the Tesco-Lotus is. Tesco is on the southwest corner; BKK Grill is on the northwest corner, a block south of Nawamin. I think the soi is Ladplakhao 77.

I have no financial interest in the place; just wanted to share with folks who may live near here (there), and I know there are a few.

I'd be curious to know if anyone else has been to this place.

There's a BKK Grill in the town where I live (Chanthaburi), loose gemstone capital of the world. Be on the alert, they just printed new menus and spaghetti has increaed to 69, burgers to 79. The combo dishes however, remained the same price 99/119/129/149, depending what you order, and portions are still large. They have local beef for 99-119, or imported from 119-399. I usually have a pork chop because I can still remember how a really good steak tastes. Other than a few hotels, it's the only place to get any beef in this town.

Landmark burger??

was this after a late night of drinks, where anything tastes good. I've had the burger many times over the years (mostly pre-dawn times) and when coming back to Landmark for the odd afternoon found the burger ok at best. frozen patties, where the steam of the heated ice crystals make the patty moist.

there was one time when I came in during the day with 4 friends raving about the burgers at Landmark. we each ordered one. one of us did not receive there's and we waited and waited while the three of us ate. we inquired, seems a mix up with the order, so it was rushed out to us.
when it came, and was the size of a frisbee since the patty was pushed down so hard that the middle part was punctured and you could still taste the frozen chill of the meat in other parts.

as to BKK grill, never tried, but sounds similar to many of the cheap eateries around the Uni campuses. Sam Yan near Chula has many places similar in description, that I have tried as well, nothing over 150 baht except for the odd US beef at 300-400 baht. Not sure if that is US beef, but since the meat is sliced so thin anything is possible. typically the sets on the menu come with a bowl of spaghetti, some buttered toast, salad with a mayo dressing and the main dish either pork, chicken or beef. Thai food also on the menu as well.
