i was told it took a LONG time and the bus option was very uncomfortable.
if it is anything like the 13 bus trip I took from Nong Khai, then I will definately give it a miss.
you can get the overnight train from Bangkok to Surathani and then bus to Phuket.
train prices range from 650-1300 B.

ive booked tickets by bus leaving from bangkok at 7pm from the southern terminal. Journey is around 12 hours i'm told- in a luxury a/c bus (2/2 seats). the cost is 700 baht one way. Friends have done it before and they said its quite pleasant- just the time factor. I'd rather save the bob for the beer bars babes! Now repeat that 10 times fast.
In phuket just before christmas. Catch everybody there!

B 700 in luxury coach for 12 hours not bad I think if you have company and comaparing to by Air prices. But doing it on your own will be bit lonely and tiring. Beside not sure how safe it will be. is there lot of tourist using this service or just the locals?

a lot fo my friends have used it on their phuket trips- I think its quite packed with tourists. There are other a/c buses which go down to 500baht one way. Its going to be my first time using it and its been highly recomended- plus i'll have some very nice company. One night- no worries. Go to sleep in bkk and wake up in phuket.

if you have booked the bus direct and it goes from the southern terminal no problems
but if you have booked the bus from khao san road wanting a very cheap deal these are the buses where your regular robberies take place these are usually a one man band type operation
all you need to do is check the lonely planet websites thorn tree to find oiut how many times people find things have been stolen from them

The taxi mafia run Phuket and you would be looking at 200 to 250 baht each way from Kata/Karon to Patong - so take 500 baht a night off the cost of your Patong accom and it don't look as bad.
There are a few beer bars in Karon in the centre of town - just the usual kiosk type ones mostly. The Moon bar is my favourite but is nothing special. Yes there are short time rooms available nearby but it took the TG three phone calls to find one for her and her newbie punter last time I was there in October. The poor guy nearly bolted as my drinking mate kept making out she was his TGF and telling her in Thai he could not live without her while glaring at him. The TG knows us both - don't say they can't be turned red with embarassment.
Also the bus terminal is in Phuket town so have up to another 300 baht ready to get you from there to your hotel in Patong (you will probably find someone on the bus to share that cost with though).
